Blog Tour Promo Post: When She Dreams by Amanda Quick

at 5/04/2022 10:34:00 AM 0 comments

Return to 1930s Burning Cove, California, the glamorous seaside playground for Hollywood stars, mobsters, spies, and a host of others who find more than they bargain for in this mysterious town.

Maggie Lodge, assistant to the reclusive advice columnist known only as Dear Aunt Cornelia to her readers, hires down-but-not-quite-out private eye Sam Sage to help track down the person who is blackmailing her employer. Maggie and Sam are a mismatched pair. As far as Sam is concerned, Maggie is reckless and in over her head. She is not what he had in mind for a client, but he can’t afford to be choosy. Maggie, on the other hand, is convinced that Sam is badly in need of guidance and good advice. She does not hesitate to give him both.

In spite of the verbal fireworks between them, they are fiercely attracted to each other, but each is convinced it would be a mistake to let passion take over. They are, after all, keeping secrets from each other. Sam is haunted by his past, which includes a marriage shattered by betrayal and violence. Maggie is troubled by intense and vivid dreams—dreams that she can sometimes control. There are those who want to run experiments on her and use her for their own purposes, while others think she should be committed to an asylum.

When the pair discovers someone is impersonating Aunt Cornelia at a conference on psychic dreaming and a woman dies at the conference, the door is opened to a dangerous web of blackmail and murder. Secrets from the past are revealed, leaving Maggie and Sam in the path of a ruthless killer who will stop at nothing to exact vengeance.

It struck him that being here with Maggie was different. Sam was comfortable standing in the alcove with her for a couple of reasons. The first was that she wasn’t asking him to become something he wasn’t. She had been concerned about the evening jacket only because she thought it constituted the camouflage he needed to go undercover for the investigation.

So, yes, she was enthusiastic when it came to telling him how to do his job, but he had no problem with that. He already knew how to do his job. He found it entertaining to have her instruct him in the art of investigation. Okay, it was also irritating. Why did it amuse him? One of the mysteries of the universe, probably. Make that one of the mysteries of Maggie Lodge.

As for the second reason why he was happy to stand here with her—well, he wasn’t sure what it was yet, but there was another reason, of that he was positive.

Her own camouflage this evening was entirely satisfactory, as far as he was concerned. She wore an emerald green number with short, fluttery sleeves. The dress was demure in front, cut low in back, and clung to her feline curves. The silky fabric flowed over her hips and stopped just short of her very nice ankles and green evening sandals.

Her hair was parted in the center and clipped back behind her ears with a couple of combs. It fell in soft waves to her shoulders. Her jewelry was limited to a pair of simple gold earrings and a tiny evening bag studded with gold sequins. Classy. He would have been content to stand in the alcove with her all evening, sipping champagne and studying the crowd.

Studying the crowd.

That was it—the second reason why he liked being here with Maggie. She was an outsider—an observer—like him. He wasn’t sure how he knew that, but he trusted his intuition. Maybe, deep down, they actually had a few things in common. But probably not.

“Guilfoyle may be a fake psychic selling dreams, but judging by the size of this crowd, it’s obvious he’s got a real talent for promotion,” he said.

Maggie sipped a little champagne but she did not take her attention off the people milling around the grand room. He knew she was searching the faces of those around them, trying to spot the woman who was posing as her employer.

“I told you, Guilfoyle has some interesting theories and techniques,” she said. “That’s why I originally planned to attend this conference.”

Sam watched Arthur and Dolores Guilfoyle play the role of gracious hosts at the entrance of the lobby. They made a handsome, glamorous couple. Dolores was a striking, sophisticated blonde. She wore a pale pink gown that glittered with what must have been a million pale pink sequins. Long pink gloves, a dainty pink bag, and a lot of jewelry completed the outfit.

Arthur had the dark eyes and the chiseled profile of a leading man. He deployed a polished charm that seemed to work as well on men as it did on women. His tailored black-and-white evening clothes fit his tall, lean frame with the perfection that could only be achieved with hand-tailoring. His dark, collar-length hair was brushed back from a dramatic widow’s peak and gleamed with just the right amount of oil.

In addition to the Guilfoyles, four attractive young people—two male and two female—circulated around the room offering champagne and a warm welcome. They wore name tags identifying them as dream guides. They all looked as if they had been borrowed from a movie studio for the evening.

“Do you think there’s something wrong with Guilfoyle’s eyes?” Sam asked in low tones.

“His eyes?” Maggie was obviously surprised by the question. “No, what makes you ask that?”

“I noticed a weird look in them when he kissed your hand.”

“Oh, right.” Maggie smiled. “Mr. Guilfoyle possesses what is called a smoldering gaze.”

“I thought maybe he had a vision problem. Does the smoldering thing work on you?”

“Under other circumstances, I might find it entertaining, but I have other interests at the moment.”

ARC Review: Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews

at 8/24/2020 07:30:00 PM 0 comments

Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times bestselling author, continues her spellbinding series set in the Hidden Legacy world where magic controls everything…except the hearts of those who wield it.

As Prime magic users, Catalina Baylor and her sisters have extraordinary powers—powers their ruthless grandmother would love to control. Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state, but that has risks as well. When House Baylor is under attack and monsters haunt her every step, Catalina is forced to rely on handsome, dangerous Alessandro Sagredo, the Prime who crushed her heart.

The nightmare that Alessandro has fought since childhood has come roaring back to life, but now Catalina is under threat. Not even his lifelong quest for revenge will stop him from keeping her safe, even if every battle could be his last. Because Catalina won't rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that's tearing their world apart.

SPOILERS ABOUND

Wooooo! This book was an emotional roller coaster ride. The events of Emerald Blaze take place six months after the end of Sapphire Flames. Catalina Baylor, Head of House Baylor and Prime Siren, is adapting to life's punches. After her almost relationship with Alessandro Sagredo, Catalina is living her life. Her duties as the Deputy Warden of Texas and Head of House Baylor keeps her busy. A case involving a trained monkey leads to a monstrous discovery. New mutant creatures are making their homes in the Pit, the sunken swamp habitat formerly known as Jersey Village. Suspecting that the creatures are magic-made, Catalina takes over a related case as a cover for her main investigation. The related case involves the death of Felix Morton, a Prime Geokinetic. House Morton and four other Houses signed a business contract to bankroll a construction project to makeover the Pit. Then, Felix Morton is found dead on the worksite. The Head of House Morton hired Montgomery Investigative Industries to find out who killed his son

Once again, Catalina and Alessandro will have to work together to find the culprit, but navigating the Prime infested waters is only half the challenge. The creatures of the Pit do not like their habitat being disturbed and they are fighting back. Secrets abound and plots unfold as Catalina and Alessandro become closer. This book is the second book in Catalina's story arc and her character is more fleshed out than before. She's smart, deadly, and every inch a Prime. I so enjoyed her interactions with her family. With a few close calls and a dastardly plot to ensnare the Baylors, Emerald Blaze was thrilling and satisfying. Enemies are around every corner and it'll take everything Catalina has to stay ahead of the game.

ABOUT ILONA ANDREWS

ILONA ANDREWS is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Times and USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

Book Review: Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews

In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the Head of her House. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.

But behind the scenes, powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian Prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.

To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her House–and her heart.

Well, damn. Watch out world, Catalina Baylor is here! I love the Hidden Legacies series with Nevada at the helm, but in this story arc, Catalina, second-born daughter of the Baylor family, shines! We first meet Catalina in Nevada's story arc as a "shy" and timid wallflower. This could not be further from the truth. The nature of Catalina's power causes those around her to fall under compulsion and vulnerable to suggestion; but as the compulsion builds, their obsession with her grows to the point of madness. Then they would physically tear Catalina apart just to get a piece of her. *shudders* For those who read Diamond Fire, the novella, you can see the start of Catalina's transformation into the Head of House Baylor. Three years have passed since the events of Diamond Fire and "shy" Catalina is no more. As the Head of her House, Catalina has her polished Prime veneer, courtesy of Arrosa Rogan's training and mentor ship. Sapphire Flames starts with a dangerous case involving the fiery deaths of two Primes from House Etterson. With their three-year grace period ending in a few days, Catalina decides to take on the Etterson case. During the course of the investigation, nothing is as it seems. Of course, things become even more complicated when Alessandro Sagredo, an Antistati Prime and Catalina's teenage crush, gets involved in the investigation.

Working together, the duo discover that the case of dead Primes is more complicated than either of them can fathom. Secret murder plots and old foes make an appearance. Forced into a position where her family's well-being hangs in the balance, Catalina holds her own and does everything necessary to keep her family safe. I liked her character development. She was a teenager in the first three Hidden Legacies book, but now she's grown and seen as a Prime and Head of House Baylor. Catalina is more comfortable in her skin and she wears it well. House Baylor is a small and relatively new House, but with the new connections Catalina forges, things are looking up. I just love the banter and tension between Catalina and Alessandro. Their relationship is heavy with sexual tension and playful jabs. The ending left me frustrated, but in a "give me more" way. During the events of the book, both Catalina and Alessandro are in their early 20s so I understand that there needs to be more character development before anything changes in their relationship. The attraction is mutual, but there's this unnamed issue in their way. Hopefully, Emerald Blaze, gives us more Alessandro goodness.

4.5 STARS!

Book Review: Flame by Donna Grant

at 6/30/2020 04:14:00 PM 0 comments

If she believed in destiny, she would believe they were meant for each other. But that fire was put out long ago. . .

Living among the Dragon Kings, Cain has spent lifetimes learning to distrust both mortals and Fae. He is a warrior born—and every instinct demands that he fight to keep his own kind safe. But when a fringe member of the Dark Fae contacts the Kings with an urgent warning, Cain is torn for the first time. How can he trust this beautiful creature when resisting his primal attraction to her is battle enough?

Noreen is horrified by what her kind and the malevolent Others are planning for the Dragon Kings. Dark Fae or not, there are lines she will not cross—even if it means risking her life. But she never imagined that she would risk her heart until she meets Cain. She wants him with a soul-deep desire that frightens her…and endangers them both. Is saying goodbye to everything Noreen has ever known worth a love that will span time and realms?

Dear Readers, we're almost there! Book 17 of the Dark Kings series features Cain and Noreen in a "enemies to lovers" story with developments in the other storylines in this series, e.g. Rhi, Erith, and Con's HEA. The main story revolves around Cain and Noreen. Noreen, a Dark Fae affiliated with the Others, the antagonists of the story. Noreen tips off the Dragon Kings about possible danger, and gets caught by the Dragon Kings. Did you really think you can fool the tech-savvy dragon? Noreen agrees to help the Dragon Kings and Cain is suspicious of her, but it doesn't stop him from lusting after her. Things do get a little confusing with some timey-wimey flashbacks and hints about who Rhi's Dragon King was. With the end scene, it narrows it down to possible theories. If you're caught up, click the spoiler button to read, otherwise skip ahead. I thought Flame was along the same vein as the previous Dragon Kings books. MCs meet, there's attraction, conflict, danger, and banging/mate talks. Y'know, the standard stuff. Per the usual, Cain and Noreen's story was a little "insta-love," but this time around, it seems a little different with the time skipping and memory manipulation. I'm glad we got to find out what happened to Balladyn and the build-up to the final showdown in the next and final book. I highly recommend new readers to start at the beginning.

Check out this post by Scottish Book Lover about the facts and lowdown about Rhi and Con!

Blog Tour Book Review: The Hunt (Devil's Isle #3) by Chloe Neill

at 9/22/2017 12:26:00 AM 12 comments

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Chicagoland Vampires Novels—the hunter becomes the hunted in a New Orleans devastated by a Paranormal war…. When bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered that Claire Connolly was a Sensitive and infected with magic, he should have turned her in to be locked up in the prison district known as Devil’s Isle. Instead, he helped her learn to control her power and introduced her to an underground group of Paranormals and humans who know the truth about the war and those who fought it.
Now the weight of Liam’s own secrets has forced him into hiding. When a government agent is killed and Claire discovers that Liam is the prime suspect, she races to find him before the government can. But she’ll discover proving his innocence is no simple matter. Their enemies are drawing closer, and time is running out….

I have been dying to read this book. Much anticipated as it was, I had high expectations. My expectations were met, for the most part. The Hunt picks up several weeks after the events of The Sight. Claire is on the lam, and she's not the only one. Liam got the hell out of dodge at the end of The Sight, presumably to sort out his issues. I understand why he ran off and Claire gets it too, but his abandonment pretty much destroyed any progress the pair of them made to becoming the OTP (original true pairing, a.k.a. couple numero uno). To get the plot moving in the right direction, Liam's brother lets Claire know that there is an arrest warrant out for Liam, after the death of a government officer. With Liam being the prime suspect and despite how much he hurt her, Claire goes looking for him. Sparks and tingles are still there, so I genuinely believe that they will somehow get over this little speed bump and get together. For the Chicagoland Vampire fans, if you recall, Merit and Ethan didn't get together right from the get-go, so why would Claire and Liam get a pass? Overall, I did enjoy the book. The pacing in the beginning was a little slow, but all in all, I liked how everything turned out. Now, I eagerly wait Wild Hunger, the first book in Chloe's new Heirs of Chicagoland series. I. CAN'T. WAIT.
I, myself, will be giving away a packet of Chloe Neill goodness. The packet will include:

  • Devil’s Isle sticker sheet, coaster, and bookplate

This is it, you guys. It's the end of the Merit train. I started and stopped reading this book so many times, just to prolong the end. If you want to postpone the end, just a little bit, read Phantom Kiss; it's the novella before the last book. For all of the hardcore Chicagoland fans, we all know Merit and Ethan have had a tumultuous history together. Lots of ups and downs with a side of tears. Since this is the last book for Ethan and Merit, you know there's got to be a Big Bad Guy. With the Cadogan Vampires and allies at their back, Merit and Ethan will face this evil together. With familiar faces and fan favorite House members, this book was a satisfying ending to the Methan storyline. While I am sad that Ethan and Merit's story has come to a close, fear not! Chloe is working hard on a spin-off Chicagoland series and don't forget about her Devil's Isle series
