“No judgment,” he murmured. “There’s no anger in your eyes, no rage or disgust at me for being a cold bastard. No pity for the kid I was who got beaten in a dirty alley and left to die.”
“Don’t be too sure you understand what I feel.”
“Why not? I actually think I understand you very, very well.”
Sarah backed up a step.
A faint smile curved his lips. “It was there from the first time I saw you. That instant connection. Doesn’t happen often. Actually, it’s never happened to me before. I looked up, saw you, and thought—”
Sarah pretty much ran for the door.
But he caught her. His hands wrapped around her and Jax pulled her back against his body. His hold wasn’t hard or rough. Oddly, it was infinitely tender.
“Do you know what I saw when I looked in your eyes?” he whispered into her ear.
Sarah shook her head.
“You were hurting. Trying to hide your pain, but I could still see it. I looked at you and thought—I never want her to hurt again.
Tears stung her eyes. “You don’t know me. Or what I’ve done.” Jax thought his past was bad? It was nothing compared to hers. She still had nightmares that had her waking in the night, choking for breath, and begging for help.
Help that hadn’t come. Not in time.
“Tell me why you came to see me tonight, Sarah.”
She sucked in a quick breath and decided to go with the truth. “Because I didn’t want to lie in bed and be afraid. Because I didn’t want to think about the past or the future.” Because she’d felt that insane connection between them, too.
The first time she’d seen him, she’d looked into his eyes and thought—
He can handle all my darkness. He won’t ever be afraid of what I tell him.
Because his gaze had told her that he’d already looked into hell … and hadn’t given a damn about the demons there.
He turned her in his arms. She made herself look up and into his eyes. He was so warm and strong against her. And he made her … want. Yearn for things that she’d denied herself for so very long.
Because she hadn’t wanted anyone to get close. She hadn’t trusted anyone with all her secrets.
She didn’t trust him, either. She’d be a fool to do that. But—she did want him. And every instinct Sarah possessed screamed at her that Jax Fontaine could give her the sensual oblivion she craved.
A few hours to forget. A few hours to just pretend that I’m not the freak in the room. The monster that everyone else fears.
“What do you want from me?” Jax asked her.
Just a night. She’d be leaving New Orleans soon, flying out on a plane and heading back to her little house in the suburbs of Atlanta. They wouldn’t see each other again. So no one else would know about what happened tonight. Just her.
Just him.

His blue gaze sharpened on her. “Are you afraid of me?”
“Aren’t most people?” she dodged. Most smart people?
“Yes, but they have a reason to fear me.” His knuckles fell away from her. “You don’t. I wouldn’t ever hurt you.”
Right. Like she was just supposed to take him at his word. Once Jax had been drawn into LOST’s investigation, Sarah had made it a top priority to learn as much about him as she could. Only it turned out that there wasn’t a whole lot to discover. Most of his past was cloaked, little more than rumors and smoke. Sure, she’d seen his criminal record, but that had been all juvie stuff. The guy had been good at covering his tracks once he’d become legal.
He’d been on the streets since he was a teenager. Somehow, he’d clawed his way—quite literally—out of the gutter and become a force to be reckoned with in the area. He owned several businesses and had connections that stretched across the county. And the local police were sure that he was a criminal. They just hadn’t been able to pin any serious crimes on him.
It’s hard because he has money and power. And he’s smart. She could see the intelligence in his eyes. The cunning. He won’t make mistakes easily.
“I love it when your mind starts spinning,” he murmured, his voice a deep rumble. “Tell me, Dr. Jacobs, are you profiling me right now?”
Her hands lifted and she shoved against his chest. He backed up, not because she’d been uber strong and knocked him back, but because … dammit, she suspected he moved for her.
To make her feel in control.
But he likes power.
And, hell, she was profiling him. “I don’t understand the point of this little meeting. Stopping a woman in the elevator is hardly an appropriate pick-up routine—”
He laughed. His laughter actually sounded real. Warm and rough, and it rolled right over her.
“How is anything about us appropriate?” Jax asked. That man’s voice—so deep and rumbly—it was like pure sex. She was pretty sure, like one hundred percent so, that he normally had women tossing their panties at him on sight.
She wasn’t one of those women. Or, rather, she was trying not to be one of those women.

Mine To Have
(Mine Series, Book #5)
by Cynthia Eden

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cynthia Eden continues her sexy “Mine” romantic suspense series with…MINE TO HAVE.

Is he a hero…or the villain?

When Elizabeth Ward sees Saxon Black rushing into the backroom of The Blade—a low end bar in Miami—she isn’t sure if he’s there to save the day…or just to raise some hell. But she’s being held hostage, and he’s her best hope of survival. Within minutes, she’s away from the jerks with the guns and riding fast and hard on the back of Saxon’s motorcycle.

Death stalks them.

Saxon has been working undercover for far too long. When he finds sexy Elizabeth—with a gun to her head—he knows he will do anything to keep her safe. But once he gets her away from her abductors, the threat to her isn’t over. Someone has put a price on Elizabeth’s head, and if Saxon can’t keep her safe from the danger stalking her, then she’ll be dead.

Their lives are both on the line.

As their enemies close in, Elizabeth and Saxon must go on the run. And the longer they are together, the hotter their attraction for one another seems to burn. Saxon vows not to let anyone hurt her, no matter what he has to do, because he’s falling fast for Elizabeth. He’ll stop the killers on her trail, and then he’ll have her. Forever.

MINE TO HAVE.

My Review

I love Cynthia Eden! I cannot say that enough. This book was, in my opinion, is the steamiest one yet. Cynthia has always has a way with weaving together a steady plot with a few twists, here and there and very HOT sex scenes. If you haven't read any of the books in the Mine series, it's okay to read Mine to Have by itself, but everything makes more sense if you have read the previous book.

In this book, the main focus is on Saxon and Elizabeth. Saxon is burnt out from undercover work and was about to retire all together when a call from Victor stops him. His mission is to retrieve the beautiful Elizabeth Ward from the clutches of a hired killer. From the instant he laid eyes on her, he was lost...in lust and desire. :) Highly inappropriate given the circumstances, but it works with his job title. Saxon gets her away from the psychopath, but that's not the end of the story. Unbeknownst to Elizabeth, she's got a hit on her. Mafia style. There's more than one person hoping to get the reward money for Elizabeth's death. What's a girl to do? You stick with Saxon, that's what.

As the story goes on, the chemistry between Elizabeth and Saxon is palpable and quite delicious. Despite the unorthodox meeting, Elizabeth and Saxon make a great couple. It was a rocky road through their relationship, but they came out on top. (haha sorry couldn't help myself) There was also a subplot that I thought heightened the mystery and suspenseful portions of the book. This featured Victor and his investigation as to who Elizabeth Ward is and what did she do to warrant a hit. This runs into several complications. There's a leak within Victor's department and who it is, is a mystery, but how far does the conspiracy go? People are getting murdered left and right and who can you trust? We see familiar faces from the previous book, which I liked.

This book, in case you haven't picked it up, is AWESOME! I've never had a bad experience reading anything from Cynthia Eden. A solid 5 stars to you, Cynthia! :)

Excerpt

“You can let go now.” His voice was the deepest, darkest rumble she’d ever heard, and it actually took a few seconds for his words to sink in. When they did, she was horrified. Her hands flew away from him and she shot off that motorcycle. A bad move, really, because her thighs were still shaking from the ride, and Elizabeth hit the ground.

Smooth move.

She pushed up fast, though, and staggered to her feet. Elizabeth tossed away her helmet and ran. Unfortunately, she didn’t get far. A big, strong hand caught her shoulder and spun her around. In the next breath, her back was being pushed into the nearby brick wall, and Saxon had her hands pinned above her head. He held her easily, her wrists trapped in one of his hands.

“Didn’t we cover this?” he muttered, and his voice, if possible, had gone even

deeper. “No screaming, no running—”

“No fighting,” she whispered back to him. “You said no...fighting. You never

said I couldn’t run.”

He laughed then. A sound that was as deep as his voice and sent shivers racing

over her body.

A man wasn’t supposed to laugh when a woman was terrified. She knew nothing about the guy except for the fact that she’d seen him shoot two men and beat the crap out of at least two more. And he’d said he...wanted her.

For an hour.

“Please, let me go.” Elizabeth wasn’t above begging, not then. She just wanted to survive that night. To get back to her apartment and pretend this whole terrible nightmare had never happened. “I won’t go to the police, I promise. I won’t tell them anything about you.”

His head came closer to hers. She couldn’t discern much about him in that moment, it was too dark, but she’d seen plenty in that terrible little room.

Saxon. He’d been huge, filling that doorway. He had to be at least six foot three, and his shoulders had been so wide, his arms heavy with muscles. He wore a faded t-shirt and loose jeans. He’d fought with a cold, vicious fury, and he hadn’t even broken a sweat when he’d taken down his enemies.

I thought Kurt was scary. He’s nothing compared to this guy.

“I don’t want to let you go.”

Those words terrified her. No, he terrified her. He leaned even closer. She could feel the light stir of his breath against her cheek. She had a flash of being tied in that chair and looking up—and into a pair of dark and deadly eyes.

And I asked him for help? A desperate woman would do anything. And she was
desperate right then.
