Release Day Blitz: City of the Fallen by Diana Bocco

at 6/28/2013 04:13:00 PM 0 comments

Five years ago, vampires came out of hiding and took over the world. It was meant to be a quick enslavement but it turned into a bloody battle that brought humanity to the brink of extinction.
Isabelle Bryant is one of the “lucky” survivors, now living in hiding, scavenging for food through deserted towns.
And she’s tired of it.
So she’s devised a plan: find the king of the vampires and drive a stake through his heart.
Except that wickedly sensual king Marcus is nothing like the monster she expected. And while landing on his bed was part of the plan all along, discovering that he might hold the key to humanity’s survival certainly wasn’t. The catch? Saving humanity also means ensuring vampire survival. It means giving up hope for a return to a human-ruled world.
As sparks fly and hate becomes heat, Isabelle must pick a side -- before the darkness devours them all.

This book is set on a similar premise as Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. I wonder how Diana Bocco spins her story. :) Keep reading below to see an excerpt from the book.

~*~Excerpt~*~

His eyes were locked on hers. “Are you afraid of me?”
“No.”
There it was, the real answer. She had been asking herself that exact question since the moment she saw him. Was she afraid of him? Would she be once he got close, once she knew there was nowhere to run? And the truth was that she wasn’t. The king inspired a very different, more powerful emotion in her. Something that completely erased any hint of fear that could have been lurking around. Something that made her forget who he was and who she was and why every hint of desire clutching at her should have felt so wrong.
Even though it felt deliciously right.
The silver in his eyes seemed to spark brighter as one of his hands extended towards her, slightly brushing her cheek before settling on the back of her neck.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she repeated, more to savor the revelation than to reassure him.
And then his mouth reached for hers and her mind went blank.
A soft moan escaped her throat as soon as his lips touched hers. It was a sound of wanting but also of surrender. She wanted this. Her body craved it, but so did something deeper inside of her, something that was waking up with every passing second.
She was expecting a hard invasion, but he didn’t push. Instead, his lips were soft, testing and tasting. The silky caress was so erotic, her whole body turned to liquid, melting into his. More, she needed more. She moaned against his mouth and her lips opened.
And then all of a sudden the gentleness was gone. His tongue darted into her mouth, twining with hers, demanding a response, while his hands ran down her ribs and towards her lower back.
One of his hands reached for her waist, sliding her under him. As he leaned over her, every inch of skin he touched went up in flames, warmth extending inwards and spreading like wildfire. Part of her mind was desperately trying to hold on to reason, reminding her over and over that he wasn’t human.
Except the things he was making her body feel were all very human.
His hand moved under her shirt and her whole body trembled as if hit by an electrical current. His touch was hypnotic. So wrong and yet so right. She arched against him, begging for more.
He growled in response and moved his hand higher, reaching for her breast.
Before his fingers touched her nipple, it had already hardened. When he finally touched her, he let a groan out and pushed harder into her mouth. He sucked on her tongue and she found herself falling deeper into the darkness, into him. Nothing mattered at the moment. Not her mission, not her hate for the monsters. All that mattered was his hands and his tongue dancing with hers. Because nothing she had ever felt, nobody she had ever touched, had felt like this.
Then all of a sudden, he broke the kiss. A moan of complaint left her throat and she reached for his mouth, but he pulled back. She opened her eyes, searching for an explanation—and found his eyes locked on hers, bright silver and deep.
“Marcus,” he groaned, his chest rising up and down rapidly.
She tried to make sense through the fog of desire clogging up her mind. Her head was spinning and it was hard to concentrate on anything but his scent and his heat, dancing over her body.
“What?”
“My name is Marcus. Say it.”
She pushed against him.
“Marcus,” she whispered and the hum of his name on her lips felt like honey.
He growled, the sound rolling over her like thunder. His hands felt feverish against her skin and she could see the transformation happening in him. As the touch became more urgent, he slowly let go of his hold on humanity. His eyes darkened, his fangs came out and the rhythm of his movements became more animal, more dominant. He pressed harder, moved harder, pinching and stroking and kneading until pain started to inch closer.

Book Review: Little Miss Lovesick by Kitty Bucholtz

at 6/27/2013 01:11:00 AM 3 comments

Sydney Riley hears voices in her head...
Voices that keep her sane and voices that drive her crazy. The one thing they all agree on - forget Dirk the Jerk and move on.
So Sydney lets her friends drag her into the wilds of Northern Michigan where Little Miss Lovesick, the loudest voice in Sydney’s head, runs into - literally - the perfect man. Is hot fishing guide Matt Engel the man to vanquish heartbreak?
With the vacation flirtation behind her, Sydney is ready to start again. Soon after, however, a difficult - and must keep - client demands Sydney work with his new contractor. Yes, one and the same Matt Engel, hotter than ever and right here in town.
But when Matt’s past comes between them, Sydney wonders how to prevent another broken heart. As the rest of her life spirals out of control, she learns that sometimes a plan isn’t enough without friends to share the load.
Maybe together they can even help Little Miss Lovesick find what she’s been fishing for.

So what happens when you find the perfect guy and his past comes back just in time to haunt him? Sydney Riley is recovering from Dirk the Jerk and his abrupt departure from her life. She was one of those girls who has an almighty plan with the usually white picket fence, 2.4 (apparently it's possible) kids and the perfect domestic husband. Dirk the Jerk as he was so aptly named, dumped our poor heroine because he was "in love with someone else." This coming from the guy who wouldn't commit to moving in together, but had no qualms taking Sydney's V card. To distract herself from her sorrows, Sydney and a couple of ladies are on their way to a fishing trip. On this trip, Sydney meets a hot fishing guide named Matt. The flirting between the two during the fishing trip was hilarious and cute at the same time. Poor Sydney just blurted out whatever she was think about him.

"You’re eyes are so beauti- blueti- blue,” I stuttered, “I wondered if you wore blue contacts.” I closed my eyes and yanked on my fishing line. That did sound stupid. He moved closer and lowered his voice. “You think my eyes are beautiful?” (Kindle Locations 884-887).

She's got it bad! Sydney thought she saw the last of Mr. Sexy Fishing Guide, but Fate has another thing planned for Sydney. Her boss, Perry, has a huge client that needs some work done and has Syndey working his newly hired contractor. Lo and behold,
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot throughout the book was steady. Matt and Sydney's courtship is modern and cute, with phone tag. Sydney is such a "down on her luck" kind of girl. It's misfortune after misfortune for this girl, you can't help but feel some sympathy for her. I mean, dropping one's chicken sandwich and fries in a puddle is just so sad! Overall the pace was a okay, with the appropriate number of bumps along the way with a neat ending. I give this book a rating of....

4 stars!

Book Review: Jezebel by Koko Brown

at 6/22/2013 10:50:00 PM 1 comments
Celeste Newsome is a good time girl with plenty of personal demons. The beautiful dancer holds them at bay with late night benders, plenty of hooch and the company of the opposite sex.
Determined to never let anyone change her bad girl ways, and risk discovery of her Achilles heel, Celeste is turned inside out when Shane Brennan walks into her life. The handsome prizefighter slowly chips away at the hard-hearted Celeste’s defenses and becomes the only man capable of taming her wild heart.

After the most recent racist backlash over a Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple and their daughter, I was even more interested in reading this book. The premise of the story revolves around Miss Celeste Newsome, a talented and popular dancer. I must say that the first chapter portrayal of her and the chapters there after was a bit of a 180. In the first chapter, Celeste came off as a high maintenance, flighty, much like Kristen Bell's character, Nikki, in Burlesque, but lacks the mean spirit. In the next chapters, Celeste is seen as an emotionally scarred young woman who returns home after the death of her father. There's no love lost between the two. Her father, the "Reverend," presumably hated Celeste for killing her mother in childbirth and continues to belittle her until he finally kicks her out of their home when Celeste becomes a dancer. Who the hell nicknames their daughter "jezebel"? From here on out, Celeste is an independent dancer and a rising star. Initially, I hated the Reverend and the contrasting stories about him. Celeste herself said that he would donate shoes and food to the needy and had a good reputation in the town, but how could someone like that throw out his own daughter?

Celeste comes back home to pay her respects to her father with her cousin Trudy, who, like Celeste, was cast out because she was different (in the sense that she was a he who dressed and acts like a she). At the wake, Celeste meets Shane Brennan, s prizefighter with a mysterious past and even more mysterious connection with Celeste's father.

Shane Brennan, extremely good boxer with secrets up the wahzoo. Despite Celeste's reservations, they become closer and romantically involved. I loved the fact that despite the bigotry and racism around them, the couple come together and thrive, but their bliss doesn't last for long. Shane and Celeste's past comes back with a vengeance and Shane's most devastating secret will destroy any foundation he and Celeste have built.

Overall, I really liked this book. I don't really see too many books featuring interracial couples so it was a refreshing change of pace. The characters were humanly flawed and the scenes between the two as HOT, HOT, HOT! I did think that the ending lacked a bit of resolve. The issues that came between the two are not discussed, but I guess a romantic chase across cities, in lieu of a full blown declaration of love and devotion was acceptable. I give this book a rating of.....
4 stars!

    About the Author

I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn’t have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn’t exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time.
Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn’t actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.

My writing journey has not been easy. I didn’t just sit down one day, decide I was going to write a book and voila! sell my very first attempt. As most authors will probably agree, the path to publication is filled with hours of work, pulling all-nighters I thought I’d given up in college, sacrifices, rejections, but a love I discovered along the way I just can’t live without. Instead of a big, thick book to read by lamplight (I do read much smaller ones when I get the chance), I’ve traded in my reading obsession for a laptop. And I’ve never been happier.

I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a wonderful family and fabulous husband who put up with my writing—and obsessive personality—even when life is chaotic. More than once my kids have been late to swimming or baseball because I needed just five more minutes to finish a scene. Their support and encouragement mean the world to me. I also have amazing friends and a support network I couldn’t survive without. So to all of you out there who have encouraged me along the way, sent me emails and fan letters, phone calls and congratulations, I just want to say, thank you. You make this whole writing gig that much more enjoyable. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.

When is a problem not a problem? What if it is a conscious choice?
Thorn Burdette is a real life long tall, gorgeous Texan with the lean physique of an outdoorsman. He is content with his life. What’s not to like? Success, wealth and women equal smooth sailing, right?

Smart, stunning and sassy, with evolving paranormal abilities, P. J. is nothing like the women who have conga-danced through Thorn’s life.
They have nothing in common. Nothing . . . except irresistible desire and a strong sense of destiny neither can ignore nor resist.
Then she discovers his secret. A secret which leads them on a twisted journey of passion and pain neither could have foreseen.
And P. J. may be the only one who can save him . . . save them.

She has a great job, the perfect apartment, every material possession a girl her age could desire. Unfortunately, she also has an unusual condition that has forced her to keep everyone at a distance.
Ethan Kellar has spent his entire life running from destiny. When he was just a boy, a powerful seer prophesied his role in events that would determine the outcome of the secret war his people had been fighting for centuries. A role he was determined not to accept, leading him to avoid letting anyone get too close, until the night Alexa fell into his arms.
Drawn to her in a way that he has never experienced, Ethan decides to take the ultimate risk by trusting Alexa and revealing to her all that he truly is. Thinking she is an ordinary woman, he believes that she could be his key to preventing the prophecy from being fulfilled and allowing him to live the life he has always wanted, one that he chooses. Having been so consumed with the desire to determine the course of his own life he wants no less for Alexa and knows he must tell her everything, give her a choice. Before that happens they surrender to the intense physical attraction between them and he realizes too late that in trying so hard to change his fate, he may have set the events of the prophecy in motion.
In that moment, Ethan makes the most difficult decision of his life and does the only thing he can to save Alexa. He walks away.
Consumed by grief, Alexa falls into a deep depression until she learns that her brief encounter with love resulted in a child and somehow finds the strength to put herself back together for the sake of her baby Chloe.
Nearly two years after Ethan walked out Chloe develops an unexplained illness that sends Alexa in search of anything that can help. Her pursuit leads her back to Ethan and thrusts her into his dark and mysterious world, unlocking the secrets of her past and revealing threats to their future. Together, Alexa and Ethan fight to protect Chloe and their love, but there is one battle Ethan fights alone as he struggles to choose his own path and avoid the choices of fate.

    ~*~Excerpt~*~

“I am sorry, Alexa. Please understand this is incredibly difficult for me.” He leaned in and placed his forehead against hers. “I want you so badly right now, in this moment, but I want you forever more. That is why we must wait.”Well, shit. Hearing that just made her want him even more. Maybe it was all just a line of bullshit, some kind of reverse psychology to get her in bed, but it was working.Forgetting her embarrassment she leaned her face up and pressed her mouth against his yet again, then pulled away and said, “Please, Ethan,” another kiss, “please, I want to be with you tonight.”Before she could blink he was over the center console kissing her fervently as he pressed his knee between her legs sending a jolt of arousal through her.And just like that he pulled back, hovering over her and looking into her eyes while she panted with desire.“Alexa, I cannot come up with you tonight.” Her expression became one of hurt and confusion, until he continued, “But, I am going to make you cum with my mouth, I must taste you.”His words and the hunger in his eyes were almost enough to send her over the edge. And then he crushed his mouth against hers, sliding his tongue inside as a promise of what was to come when he moved between her legs.

Blog Tour Post: Gravity by Dannika Dark

    at 6/09/2013 11:30:00 PM 0 comments
When a choice is made, it will forever alter the course of our destiny. It cannot be undone, for fate is a river changing direction and carving away the bed of our hearts like everlasting fractures.
A difficult past has left Silver broken, but she is learning to trust again through Logan Cross, a Chitah who has convinced her that a dangerous man can change. Their conviction for each other will be put to the ultimate test when an old nemesis reappears and flips her world upside down. Will Logan be able to tame the animal within, or will he succumb to his impulsive nature?
The ongoing investigation into Breed experiments unveils a shocking secret about Silver’s past. Standing at a fork in the road, Silver is forced to make a decision. Each comes with consequence, and there is no turning back.

WOW! This book was awesome! Full of angst, pain, revenge, rage, despair, love and mystery, Gravity was such a good read. The book starts off with Silver, our leading lady and main protag. Silver is still learning the ins and outs of her abilities. The plot line to this volume is a little wonky, but it all makes sense in the end with the mini plot lines converge into the main plot line. All of the characters you love make an appearance! I have to say that my favorite guy is Justus and in this volume of the Mageri series, he gets an interesting complication in his life and I just loved how he came to terms with it! He's just so... HOT! (hahaha). In his own little plotline he tangles with a strong-willed Relic named Page. She was in the previous books when Silver was bitten by a Chitah and she was the one who helped heal her. I hope

In Gravity, a lot of stuff goes down...like seriously! We learn more about the labs and scientists that performed experiments on fetuses like Silver and the new info will shock you! duh duh duhhhhh! The gang are trying their best to track down one of the lead scientists in the mad experiment. Meanwhile, a coup is in the works and the guy we all hate is back! Who? You'll have to read the book to find out! Just know that this person is responsible for a majority of the heartache between Silver and her Chitah, Logan! (sniffles) Oh, the pain! Definitely need some tissues from time to time. Definitely a lot of blood was spilled at the hands of this jerkface and he's back with a vengeance, literally!

I absolutely loved this book! I can't wait to read the next one! I give this book a rating of......

    4½ stars!

    ~*~About the Author~*~

Down in Texas, there's a woman who drinks copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to her laptop. Yeah, I know. I've got a drinking problem. Hi, I'm Danni. When I'm not writing (which is all the time), I'm listening to obscure music, watching movies, reading, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the internet. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I'm not sure which). Some people count sheep when they have insomnia. Since I was little, I used to make up stories in my head in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I'd get so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down more and more, creating short stories which evolved into poetry. Lots and lots of poetry. It's almost embarrassing that I have an entire box loaded with spiral notebooks filled with furious, heartfelt, and blushing words. Apparently, I had a lot to say. Another one of my hobbies is digital art. I designed all my book covers.  I am finally doing what I have always wanted to: giving my characters a pulse through publishing. I write adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels. I let the story tell itself, and color outside the lines. I am not a YA author, but I think it’s pretty great that there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal. These are the future readers! The work that goes behind self publishing is hard work, I won't lie. On top of my regular day job: I write, edit, format, create cover art, and market. But it's what I love to do, and someday, I'm going to be doing this full time.
