Blog Tour Book Review: Resonance Surge by Nalini Singh

at 7/18/2023 12:30:00 AM 0 comments

Twins Pavel and Yakov Stepyrev of the StoneWater bear changeling clan have been an inseparable unit since birth, but now their lives are moving in different directions.

Pavel is in the mating dance with Arwen Mercant, the only man to ever bring him to his knees. A Psy empath, Arwen is free to feel emotion now that Silence has fallen. While he is free to love in the open now, it doesn’t come easy. Pavel walks a fine line in loving Arwen, careful not to push him too far, too fast.

Another pair of twins, Pax and Theodora Marshall, have a bond with a far darker history. A low-Gradient Psy, Theo is considered worthless by everyone but her violently powerful and loyal brother, Pax. She is the only person he trusts to investigate a hidden and terrible part of their family history—an unregistered rehabilitation Center established by their grandfather.

The Centers, places of unimaginable pain designed to psychically wipe minds, are an ugly remnant of the Psy race’s Silent past. And now Theo must uncover the awful truth of this secret Center alongside Yakov, who certainly doesn’t trust her. Especially considering that Theo has been haunting his dreams since he was sixteen…

Yakov is the great-grandson of a foreseer and he’s already seen Theo’s death. The question is how can he stop it?

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader's copy from Berkley, an imprint of HarperCollins, via Penguin Random House. The following thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. Spoilers below. Read at your own risk.

I've been a fan of Nalini Singh and her Psy-Changling series for a long time. Writing is not easy, especially when writing a series. Keeping the story fresh while incorporating a full cast of characters is a juggling act that I think Nalini is very good at.

This book is a little different from previous Psy-Changeling-Trinity books. We're back with the StoneWater Bears! Pavel and Yakov Stepyrev with their love interests Arwen Mercant and Theodora Marshall, respectively. Since the book features two couples, there is alternating POV. I like alternative POVs because we see the world from that character's perspective. We see other characters that add context to the current state of the world, especially since the creation of the island on the PsyNet created by Ivan Mercant (see Storm Echo). Due to having a F-Psy ancestor, Pavel and Yakov have heightened psychic senses. Since he was sixteen, Yakov has been dreaming of Theo, however, the dreams stopped. It was only until recently that he started to have dreams of an adult Theo and her subsequent death. It certainly doesn't help that there is a serial killer running around Moscow killing women with similar hair and coloring to Theo.

The Marshall Group was something I wondered about. Lead by Pax Marshall, following the assassination of Councilor Marshall Hyde, the Marshall Group is a nest of vipers despite their adherence to Silence. Pax Marshall, is presented as a typical Psy with Silent guards, but he cares for his twin sister, Theo. I appreciated the bond between brother and sister, especially since they're twins. Pax is waging battles on all fronts, within the family and in the business world. If that wasn't hard enough, he also has Scarab Syndrome. He's a ticking time bomb. He's mentioned throughout the book and has interactions with several characters, but the scene at the end of the book makes me nervous for the future of the Psy-Changeling universe.

Back to the main couples, the romance between Yakov and Theo was quickly established. The whiplash I got from how quickly this pair got together was something else. I thought their relationship progressed too fast, but at the same time, I understand that Yakov's "known" her for some time. The initial wariness between Yakov and Theo quickly turned into a tenuous partnership and genuine affection. Moving on to the other couple: in previous books, Arwen and Pavel have been dating, but in this book, it's established that same-sex mating bonds is possible (I cannot remember if same-sex mating bonds were previously established). Nalini has written many books and all of them have featured a male-female hetero main couple. It wasn't until recently that she wrote about the relations of same-sex couples (e.g. Aodhan and Illium) and even then, it focused more on the emotional aspect of their relationship. I assume Nalini Singh is cis-het so it makes sense for her to not delve too deeply into the sexual aspect of a same-sex couple's relationship. Her same-sex characters' interactions with each other portrays deep intimacy through other physical means, rather than just sex. Sex scenes that do occur on paper are generalized and focuses more on the emotional connection, rather than the physical.

The plot of this story was decent enough. Theo is investigating an unregistered rehabilitation Center established by her grandfather, Marshall Hyde. Little tidbits from other Psy-Changeling books portrayed Marshall Hyde as an incredibly cruel and sadistic Psy, despite the facade of Silence. We learn in this book that he funded several rehabilitation Centers to have a supply of guinea pigs for mind-altering experiments. Following his death and Pax's bid for control of the Marshall Group, the discovery of the disclosed and undisclosed rehab centers got the ball rolling as more and more of Marshall Hyde's depravity and cruelty is revealed. Overall, this book was a solid continuation of the Psy-Changeling universe.

ARC Review: Love at First Set by Jennifer Dugan

at 5/23/2023 12:30:00 AM 0 comments

This irresistible adult debut from beloved YA author Jennifer Dugan is a queer romcom for fans of Delilah Green Doesn’t Care and Written in the Stars, in which a woman gives a drunken bathroom pep talk to a hot stranger, only to find out it’s the bride-to-be she has convinced to leave her fiancé the night before the wedding.

The gym is Lizzie’s life—it’s her passion, her job, and the only place that’s ever felt like home. Unfortunately, her bosses consider her a glorified check-in girl at best, and the gym punching bag at worst.

When their son, Lizzie’s best friend James, begs her to be his plus one at his perfect sister Cara’s wedding, things go wrong immediately, culminating in Lizzie giving a drunken pep talk to a hot stranger in the women’s bathroom—except that stranger is actually the bride-to-be, and Lizzie has accidentally convinced her to ditch her groom.

Now, newly directionless Cara is on a quest to find herself, and Lizzie—desperate to make sure her bosses never find out her role in this disaster—gets strong-armed by James into “entertaining” her. Cara doesn’t have to know it’s a setup; it’ll just be a quick fling before she sobers up and goes back to her real life. After all, how could someone like Cara fall for someone like Lizzie, with no career and no future?

But the more Lizzie gets to know Cara, the more she likes her, and the more is on the line if any of her rapidly multiplying secrets get out. Because now it’s not just Lizzie’s job and entire future on the line, but also the girl of her dreams.

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader's copy from Avon Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, via NetGalley. The following thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. Spoilers below. Read at your own risk.

Jennifer Dugan is known for her YA titles and graphic novels. Hot Dog Girl was one of the many YA books I have read over the years so I was interested in how different (or not so different) Jennifer's writing would be with a different audience. Spoiler alert: If you liked Delilah Green Doesn’t Care and Written in the Stars, this book is for you.

Lizzie, our leading lady, works at a gym run by her best friend's parents (one of many spoiler alerts: they are the worst). Lizzie is a gym rat (said with affection) and dreams of someday owning and running her own gym. While the gym may be her home away from home, it's not a supportive environment. Her bosses are emotionally abusive and classist, and Lizzie's self-confidence takes hit after hit. One of the only silver linings was her bestie, James, her bosses' son. The story gets rolling with James asking Lizzie to be his plus one to his sister Cara's wedding. After consuming an unrecommended amount of alcohol, Lizzie has a drunken pep talk with a woman in the bathroom. Turns out, it was the bride and said bride bounces from the wedding. Cara, ex-bride, is determined to find herself and James assigns Lizzie to keep watch, but also "guide" her around.  As Lizzie and Cara get to know each other, things get a little heated...and messy. I'm talking about rom-com level messy. There's lots of emotional trauma and drama to go around. Lizzie and Cara were relatable in different ways. Lizzie's relationship with her mother was hard to read about. She deserves better!

A laugh-out-loud rom-com about learning to embrace living outside your comfort zone.

As a shy school librarian, Alexis Stone is comfortable keeping out of the spotlight. But when she’s dumped for being too meek—in bed!—she decides she needs to change. And what better way to kick-start her new more adventurous life than with her first one-night stand?

Enter Logan, the gorgeous, foul-mouthed stranger she meets at a hotel bar. Audacious and filterless, Logan is Alexis’s opposite—and boy, do opposites attract! Just as she’s about to fulfill her hookup wish, the hotel catches fire in a freak lightning storm. In their rush to escape, Logan is discovered carrying her into the street, where people are waiting with cameras. Cameras Logan promptly—and shockingly—flees.

Turns out Logan is none other than Logan Arthur, the hotshot candidate challenging the Texas governor’s seat. What could possibly go wrong?

This book was a bit surprising, given the blurb. An elementary school librarian and a hotshot politician as the main characters sounds like the something you'd find on fanfiction websites. I'm happy to report that this book exceeded my expectations. Our leading lady is Alexis Stone, librarian, and she's devastated. Her ex-boyfriend dumps her because of her "meekness" in the bedroom, Alexis is determined to prove him wrong. Her plan? Find an acceptable person to have a one-night stand with. This book screams rom-com energy, and it delivers. Alexis meets Logan at the hotel bar, and they hit it off. Unfortunately, before they can do the deed, the fire alarm goes off and for some reason, the paparazzi are snapping pictures of Alexis and Logan. Turns out, Logan is an up-and-coming (no pun intended) hotshot candidate gunning for the Governor's position. To mitigate the sh*tstorm of this "scandal," fake dating and romance ensues. The MC is relatable and down to Earth. The progression between Alexis and Logan's relationship was at an acceptable pace. There were also other themes mixed in, such as grieving a loved one and putting yourself first. I enjoyed this book very much.

Blog Tour Book Review: What the Hex by Jessica Clare

at 4/06/2023 01:30:00 AM 0 comments

Enemies-to-lovers has never been more enchanting in this witchy romantic comedy.

Penny Roundtree wants nothing more than to be a familiar to a witch. She’s been a member of the Society of Familiars ever since she was old enough to join the Fam. There’s just a small problem—no one’s hiring. Witches and warlocks are so long-lived that there are far more familiars available than witches to train them. So when an unorthodox arrangement to apprentice under the table to a forbidden warlock presents itself, she takes it.

Willem Sauer is banned from having a familiar due to past transgressions, thereby limiting his magic-casting abilities. Unfortunately for the surly, Prussian warlock, he has no choice but to work with enthusiastic Penny as a familiar. They immediately clash like dried roan horsehair and honeycomb gathered by moonlight (it’s a terrible spell combination, ask anyone).

Casting spells has delightful perks Penny never could have dreamed of, but also greater dangers. Someone is targeting Penny. Willem and Penny must work together to catch their enemy, and if their ploy requires a little kissing on the side, who is to question the rules of magic?

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader's copy from Berkley, an imprint of Penguin Random House, via NetGalley. The following thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

All of my favorite elements were in this book. We got the grump-sunshine trope, witches and warlocks, magic and mayhem, mystery and a good amount of romantic comedy to provide some levity. Our leading lady, Penny Roundtree, was featured in the previous book Go Hex Yourself and I am so glad she got her own book. Due to the lack of available witches and warlocks who can train Familiars, Penny is stuck in limbo. Being a Familiar is her life's mission and unfortunately, she's at a standstill. So of course, when she is offered a position as a Familiar, she jumps on it, despite the somewhat controversial warlock in question. Willem Sauer, said controversial warlock, is not happy with the arrangement with Penny, but is too impatient for his Familiar ban to end. Their partnership is working out great...until threats to Penny's life crop up. Who could it possibly be? Overall, the plot/story was solid, character development and backstory were fantastically done.

ARC Review: Devouring Darkness by Chloe Neill

at 9/20/2022 01:30:00 AM 0 comments

In the newest installment of the USA Today bestselling Heirs of Chicagoland series, vampire Elisa Sullivan unearths an ancient grudge, with potentially devastating consequences.

As the only vampire ever born, and the daughter of two very powerful Chicago vampires, Elisa Sullivan knew her life was going to be…unusual. But she wanted to make her own way in the world, preferably away from her famous family. Then supernatural politics—and perhaps a bit of destiny—intervened, and Elisa had to steady her nerves and sharpen her steel to fight for the city of Chicago. Luckily, Connor Keene, son of the North American Central Pack’s Apex wolf, is right by her side.

When Elisa and her Ombudsman colleagues agree to escort a troubled sorceress to Chicago, they inadvertently set in motion a scheme of long-awaited magical vengeance. The city may pay an arcane price it can’t afford unless Elisa and her allies rise to the challenge.

Disclaimer: I received an e-galley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. Thank you, Penguin Random House (Berkley) for this opportunity. Beware of spoilers.

Where do I begin? As a major fan of the Chicagoland series, I had high expectations for the Heirs of Chicagoland. So far, no complaints here. Starting a spin-off of a beloved book series is a lot of pressure, but (in my opinion) Ms. Neill has consistently hit the mark with each book she writes. Since Wild Hunger, Elisa Sullivan has established herself as an individual and independently working as an Ombudsman, rather than relying on her family name and influence. The latest job required picking up a troubled sorceress to undergo Witness Protection, but unfortunately, things don't go according to plan. Elisa, her Ombuddy, and the target are attacked...by a mob of ghosts. Unfortunately, the trouble does not end there. A chain reaction of chaos ensues and it's up to Elisa and the other Ombudsmans to figure out what's going on and how to fix the issue.

While Elisa has her hands full with the top threat to Chicago, Connor has his own problems. Trouble is brewing among the pack. Visiting pack members are aiming for the position of Apex and have been sowing the seeds of mutiny. Connor is smart enough not to get swept up in pack politics, but these mutineers don't give him much choice. With Connor dating Elisa, several pack members feel that Connor isn't the right choice for Apex after his father's reign. Everything comes to a head when a challenge from the mutineers is issued. Commence fighting!

Coming back to Elisa and Connor's relationship, I feel that most of their issues have been settled in the previous books. They've admitted their feelings for each other and despite their young age (in comparison to their elders), they have a clear understanding of where the other stands. They support each other while they each go through their own separate battles, so to speak. However, this doesn't mean that everything was fine. Their relationship's longevity has been brought up on several occasions, particularly in this book. Despite knowing where Connor stands, Elisa fixates on his mortality. Due to her unique birth, no one knows how long Elisa's lifespan is, but most people assume that she'll have a longer lifespan than the average shifter. Connor's female suitors point this out every chance they get. Eventually, Connor and Elisa have a heart to heart, for which I am thankful for. Communication is key!

Side note, in this book, Lulu Bell has more impact. In previous books, I thought she was relegated to the peanut gallery rather than a solid side character. Previously, she's been portrayed as someone who was aware of her mother's past mistakes with dark magic and let that fear dictate her actions. Supposedly, Lulu didn't practice magic for fear of repeating her mother's mistakes. This time around, with limited options and resources, Lulu steps up to help Elisa. By the book's ending, the major conflict was resolved and Connor's status in the Pack hierarchy is cemented in stone. With this being the fourth book, everything was wrapped up nicely, but of course, the cliffhanger at the end leaves enough wiggle room for book 5 (which was confirmed by the author herself via Facebook). WOOHOO!

A gym nemesis pushes a fitness influencer to the max in Amy Lea’s steamy debut romantic comedy.

Curvy fitness influencer Crystal Chen built her career shattering gym stereotypes and mostly ignoring the trolls. After her recent breakup, she has little stamina left for men, instead finding solace in the gym – her place of power and positivity.

Enter firefighter Scott Ritchie, the smug new gym patron who routinely steals her favorite squat rack. Sparks fly as these ultra-competitive foes battle for gym domination. But after a series of escalating jabs, the last thing they expect is to run into each other at their grandparents' engagement party.

In the lead up to their grandparents' wedding, Crystal discovers there’s a soft heart under Scott’s muscled exterior. Bonding over family, fitness, and cheesy pick-up lines, she just might have found her swolemate. NOTE: I received a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review. These thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone.

TLDR; an engaging contemporary rom-com featuring a well-developed and relatable pair of main characters. Perfect for anyone who likes enemies to lovers trope and IRL tie-ins.

Chrystal Chen is a curvy, body positive fitness influencer with a massive following. Her online persona reminds me of Cassey Ho, better known as Blogilaties. After a recent break-up, Chrystal refocuses on herself at the gym. Everything was going fine until the new guy, Scott, takes up residence at Chrystal’s favorite squat rack. Unforgiveable! I love Chrystal and Scott’s dynamic. There was an initial spark, but not enough to be considered “insta-love.” There is some attraction between the two, but most of the story was focused on developing both characters as people and diving into their motivations and personal histories. This steady pace is something I appreciated. While I do enjoy fast-paced writing in other genres, for rom-coms I prefer a steady build-up. Amy Lea’s writing is equal parts humorous and realistic. There were times when I thought the story was somewhat predictable, but the character development and the real life tie-ins, e.g., racism, cyberbullying, impossible beauty standards, etc. tipped the scales in Ms. Lea’s favor. Overall, it was an enjoyable and delightful change in pace for me.

ARC Review: Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare

at 4/11/2022 01:16:00 PM 0 comments

It’s one hex of an attraction in this romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Jessica Clare.

When Reggie Johnson answers a job ad in the paper, she’s astonished to find that she’s not applying for work at her favorite card game, Spellcraft: The Magicking. Instead, she’s applying to be an actual familiar for an actual witch. As in, real magic.

The new job has a few perks - great room and board, excellent pay, and she's apprenticing to a powerful witch. Sure, the witch is a bit eccentric. And sure, there was that issue with the black cat Reggie would prefer to forget about. The biggest problem, however, is warlock Ben Magnus, her employer's nephew and the most arrogant, insufferable, maddening man to ever cast a spell.

Reggie absolutely hates him. He's handsome, but he's also bossy and irritating and orders her around. Ben's butt might look great in a crystal ball vision, but that's as far as it goes. But when someone with a vendetta targets the household, she finds herself working with Ben to break a deadly curse. Apparently, when they're not fighting like cats and dogs, things get downright...bewitching.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley. My words and opinions are my own.

Wow. This book already had my interest since I read the blurb. I love me some punny titles, especially witchy ones. I'm always on the lookout for a good contemporary paranormal romantic comedy and Go Hex Yourself fits the bill. Our leading lady is Reggie Johnson, who mistakenly applied to work as a witch's familiar/assistant. Mistakes like this happen all the time, right? So far, the job is working out great. Heck, if I was in Reggie's shoes, I'd jump on the chance of room/board, a paycheck, the notoriety of working for a powerful witch and not to mention the delicious eye candy, i.e. Ben Magnus. I do love a touch of enemies to lovers, forced proximity and sunshine/grump trope. I was particularly impressed with how Jessica Clare structured the hierarchy of witch and warlocks and how magic and curses function.

Leading lady Reggie is a broke 25 year old with a mountain of debt generously gifted to her by her parents (yikes, they are the worse), trust issues and mild-to-full blown OCD when it comes to cleaning. While she may have thought she was applying to work at her favorite card game, Reggie stays on to work with Aunt Dru for prudent and logical reasons. Namely, financial ones. Working for Aunt Dru is hardly a hardship. Reggie just has to help organize her study and prepare some potions in exchange for room/board and a paycheck. Unfortunately, Ben Magnus, Aunt Dru's nephew, doesn't think too highly of Reggie (at first). Their chemistry was pleasing enough and each character's individuality was clear. Ben and Reggie work together to find out who is cursing Aunt Dru and along the way build a grudging respect and feels for each other. Overall, it was a great read, entertaining and well written.  Hears to a sequel in the near future!

Book Review & Giveaway: Hunt the Stars by Jessie Mihalik

at 3/20/2022 12:00:00 AM 0 comments

The critically acclaimed author of Polaris Rising takes readers on an exciting journey with the start of her brand-new series about a female bounty hunter and the man who is her sworn enemy.

Octavia Zarola would do anything to keep her tiny, close-knit bounty hunting crew together—even if it means accepting a job from Torran Fletcher, a ruthless former general and her sworn enemy. When Torran offers her enough credits to not only keep her crew afloat but also hire someone to fix her ship, Tavi knows that she can’t refuse—no matter how much she’d like to.

With so much money on the line, Torran and his crew insist on joining the hunt. Tavi reluctantly agrees because while the handsome, stoic leader pushes all of her buttons—for both anger and desire—she’s endured worse, and the massive bonus payment he’s promised for a completed job is reason enough to shut up and deal.

But when they uncover a deeper plot that threatens the delicate peace between humans and Valoffs, Tavi suspects that Torran has been using her as the impetus for a new war. With the fate of her crew balanced on a knife’s edge, Tavi must decide where her loyalties lie—with the quiet Valoff who’s been lying to her, or with the human leaders who left her squad to die on the battlefield. And this time, she’s put her heart on the line.

Disclaimer: I received an advance reader's copy in exchange for an honest review. Spoilers abound.

I do not normally read "space opera," but something about the way Jessie Mihalik weaves a story gets me. I've been a fan since her Consortium Rebellion trilogy. You can imagine how excited I was to read this book. The first thing that caught my attention was the backstory and worldbuilding. The book starts after an intergalactic war between the Valovians (humanoid beings with telepathic abilities) and the Federated Human Planets (a mix of normal humans and enhanced humans). Given the vastness of space, traveling from one end to the other end is made easier by wormhole-like gates that are highly prized. Captain Octavia Zarola (aka Tavi) and her team are working as bounty hunters after leaving the FHP military. Unfortunately, bounty hunting was not as lucrative as one might think. In need of cash, Tavi and her team are approached by the former general of the Valovian army, Torran Fletcher, with a job opportunity. Torran needs Tavi and her crew to locate a heirloom that was stolen from Fletcher's home. While the circumstances of the job are not ideal and peace between the two races is tenuous at best, Tavi and her crew agree to the job for the promised payout.

During this job, the human crew and the Valovian crew get to know each other and build grudging respect for each group. The prejudices and opinions of each other's races slowly dissipates. Subtle and some not so subtle hints of romances make themselves known. The romance between Torran and Tavi is more of a moving subplot to keep the story interesting. The main plot is about the alleged theft and subsequent retrieval with a big-ish plot twist near the end. I'm not a fan of the insta-love trope. The attraction between the two is obvious, but each are strong-willed characters with their priorities in check. I did appreciate that their relationship was a slow burn that was built of mutual respect. The character development for Tavi and insight into her military career provides readers with a better picture into who she is as a person. While she is a tough-as-nails captain, she's also smart, kind, generous, protective, and stubborn. The  end of the book leaves much room for the secondary characters to continue the story. I look forward to it.

Final verdict...

4 stars.

But wait! You can pre-order Eclipse the Moon, book 2 of Starlight's Shadow trilogy!

Kee Ildez has been many things: hacker, soldier, bounty hunter. She never expected to be a hero, but when a shadowy group of traitors starts trying to goad the galaxy’s two superpowers into instigating an interstellar war, Kee throws herself into the search to find out who is responsible—and stop them.

Digging up hidden information is her job, so hunting traitors should be a piece of cake, but the primary suspect spent years in the military, and someone powerful is still covering his tracks. Disrupting their plans will require the help of her entire team, including Varro Runkow, a Valovian weapons expert who makes her pulse race.

Quiet, grumpy, and incredibly handsome, Varro watches her with hot eyes but ignores all of her flirting, so Kee silently vows to keep her feelings strictly platonic. But that vow will be put to the test when she and Varro are forced to leave the safety of their ship and venture into enemy territory alone.

Cut off from the rest of their team, they must figure out how to work together—and fast—because a single misstep will cost thousands of lives.
