Promo Post: Remnants (Brandon Fisher FBI series #6) by Carolyn Arnold

at 3/29/2017 12:00:00 AM 0 comments
Series: Brandon Fisher FBI series, Book 6

All that remains are whispers of the past…

When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team to investigate. But with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t proving to be an open-and-shut case.

With no quick means of identifying the victims, building a profile of this serial killer is proving more challenging than usual. How is the killer picking these victims? Why are their limbs being severed and bodies mutilated? And what is it about them that is triggering this killer to murder?

The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. But this is only the beginning, and these new leads draw the FBI into a creepy psychological nightmare. One thing is clear, though: the killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…

Book Review: Fire Me Up by Rachael Johns

at 1/04/2016 04:04:00 PM 0 comments

Can a scorching affair with a bohemian beauty tame a motorcycle man with a dark side? Rachael Johns takes the wheel in the sexy series co-written with Megan Crane, Jackie Ashenden, and Maisey Yates.

Travis “Cash” Sinclair values only two things from his days with the Deacons of Bourbon Street: his prized Harley Davidson and the man who gave it to him. But now Priest Lombard is gone, and Cash has inherited the Deacons’ clubhouse—not to mentions its unexpected tenant. She’s exactly the type of woman he tries to avoid: all incense and art, with a sharp tongue that promises trouble. So why does Cash want to push aside those flowing skirts and lose himself between her legs?

Billie Taylor fled a bad marriage to start a new life among the grit and glamour of the French Quarter. She refuses to let another man distract her from her dreams, especially an outlaw biker with nothing to offer except hot sex and an eviction notice. Cash is dangerous, with an untamed streak he tries desperately to conceal. He drives Billie wild, sending her too close to the edge for her own good. And she won’t fall under his spell—or into his bed—without a fight.

Here we go! This is the second book in the Deacons of Bourbon Street series and I absolutely loved every minute of it. The continuing plotline is finding out what really happened to Priest, the previous club president. This book features Travis “Cash” Sinclair and he has his eye on the hot art gallery manager next door to the club's bar. Billie Taylor is a newly divorcee and enjoying her new found freedom to do whatever the hell she wants. Unfortunately her new smokin' hot landlord is gunnin' to evict her and close the gallery. Well, that certainly puts a damper on things. Despite the fact that he's trying to destroy her livelihood, Billie is very much attracted to Cash and he to her. The major plot line still exists. We learn more about the events that lead to the four members being exiled and get closer yo knowing the truth about what happened to Priest. As for the romance aspect, it was a little more toned down compared to the first one, but IMO it suited this couple just fine.

4.5 stars!

ARES Security #1
Released Dec 29th, 2015
Kensington: Zebra

From the hellhole of a Taliban prison to sweet freedom, five brave military heroes have made it home—and they’re ready to take on the civilian missions no one else can. Individually they’re intimidating. Together they’re invincible. They’re the men of ARES Security.

Rafe Vargas is only in Newton, Iowa, to clear out his late grandfather’s small house. As the covert ops specialist for ARES Security, he's eager to get back to his new life in Texas. But when he crosses paths with Annie White, a haunted beauty with skeletons in her closet, he can't just walk away—not when she’s clearly in danger…

There’s a mysterious serial killer on the loose with a link to Annie’s dark past. And the closer he gets, the deeper Rafe’s instinct to protect kicks in. But even with his considerable skill, Annie’s courage, and his ARES buddies behind him, the slaying won’t stop. Now it’s only a matter of time before Annie’s next—unless they can unravel a history of deadly lies that won’t be buried.

“A fantastic blend of romance and suspense…thrilling to the end.”
--Mary Burton, USA Today bestselling author

Her thought was interrupted as she kicked a small object that had been left in the middle of the floor.
Automatically glancing down she came to a sharp halt, her breath locked in her chest as she leaned over to pick up the small doll with the mass of tangled blond hair.
            Britney Spears.
It was covered in dust, and the clothes were rumpled, but Annie had a vivid memory of dancing through the house with the doll clutched in her hand.
The sun had been shining and her father was laughing as he watched her silly antics.
            “Annie?”
The sound of Rafe’s deep voice broke her out of the past, although the precious feelings of childish joy refused to be completely dismissed.
“This house should be a place of horror, but I had such good memories,” she muttered, her attention locked on the doll that looked as lost and broken as she felt since returning to Newton.
He moved to stand next to her, his hands clenching as if he was battling the urge to reach out and touch her. “You loved your father?”
“Very much,” she admitted without hesitation, lifting her head to meet his searching gaze. “I know you must think it’s twisted, but he was always kind and patient and funny when we were together.”
“I don’t think it’s twisted at all,” he protested. “Tell me about him.” He held up a hand when she frowned. “I mean, tell me about him as your father.”
Expecting the usual condemnation, Annie was caught off guard by his gentle question.
No one had ever asked her about Don White as something other than the psycho serial killer.
Tentatively she allowed herself to return to the past, the doll unconsciously pressed to her chest. “He always had two Oreo cookies and a glass of milk waiting for me on that table when I came home from school.” She nodded toward the shrouded piece of furniture situated near the door. She hadn’t eaten an Oreo cookie since she’d left Newton. “And he went with me to the movies on Saturday afternoon just because I said I wanted to be an actress when I grew up. And every Sunday morning he took me to the restaurant for pancakes.” Bittersweet pain sliced through her heart. “I don’t understand how the same man could be so evil.”
“He was sick, Annie, not evil,” Rafe murmured.
She hunched a shoulder. “Is there a difference?”
“Yes. I’ve seen men in battle,” he said, a hard edge in his voice hinting at memories that were as dark and painful as her own. “Some are just naturally cruel. They enjoy causing pain because it’s a basic part of their nature.” His jaw clenched. “And there are others who’ve been ruined. By life. By war. By . . . fate. They do what they do because they can’t help themselves.”
Annie studied the lean, fiercely handsome face. How did he do it? How did he always know exactly what to say?
            It was freaky.
            “Thank you,” she breathed.
He cocked a brow. “For what?”
“Most people don’t want to think the Newton Slayer could have any redeeming qualities,” she said, having learned from the second she’d been rescued that her father was public enemy number one. “I usually feel guilty for not hating him.
            He destroyed so many lives.”
He brushed a hand over her tangled curls, careful to keep
his touch light. “He was your father.”
“Yes.” He’d been more than that. He’d been her entire family. She gave another shiver. “We should go.” He dropped his hand and nodded, keeping a small distance between them as she headed out the door and across the
rickety porch.
“My truck is at the end of the drive,” he murmured as they reached the overgrown yard. “I’ll tell Teagan to join us at the motel.”
She had a vague impression of a large man who appeared from the shadows to speak with Rafe before he was jogging toward her Jeep, but her concentration centered on keeping her feet moving forward.
            Christ, she was tired.
Rafe was back at her side by the time she reached the edge of the road, opening the door to his truck and helping her to climb into the seat before he was rounding the hood and taking his place behind the steering wheel.
In silence he started the engine, flipping the heater on high before performing a U-turn. There was a brief stop as he waited for his friend to approach the truck holding her purse that he’d obviously retrieved from her Jeep. Then, placing the bag in her lap, he shoved the truck in gear and headed back to town at a pace far slower than the one she’d used to get to the house.
Annie clutched her purse, only vaguely aware of her surroundings. She had the impression of genuine leather and a dashboard that had all the bells and whistles. The sort of truck that would be functional for work around a ranch but no doubt cost more than she made in a year. But her gaze remained glued to the dark, chiseled profile of her companion.
Safely tucked in his car with the warm air beginning to ease her shivers, there was nothing to distract her from Rafe’s sheer male beauty.
            It was . . . nice.
Almost as if she was a normal girl being driven home by a man who she found intensely attractive.
A damned shame her brief daydream didn’t last for long.
All too soon they were back in town and he was turning into the drive of the motel. Rafe pulled to a halt in the center of the parking lot and glanced in her direction.
“Do you remember where you lived before coming to Newton?”
She froze at the abrupt question, too startled to tell him it was none of his damned business.
“Most of my memories from my early childhood are fuzzy. I think my dad said that we lived overseas, but it’s really just a blur,” she admitted.
It was weird. She had such a clear recollection of her time in Newton. Time with her father. Her friends at the school she’d attended. Climbing on top of the house so she could see her father in the distant fields.
But she never could capture any memories of her days before coming to Newton or the days after she’d been found tied and blindfolded in the bomb shelter.
            “Why do you ask?”
“I thought you might have some family who could come to give you support,” he smoothly explained.
Her gaze narrowed. She sensed there was more to his question than he was admitting, but she was too tired to try and search for any hidden meanings.
“There are just my foster parents, and I don’t want to worry them,” she said.
He reached into his rear pocket, pulling out his wallet.
“Then I want your promise you’ll call me if you need anything,” he commanded, handing her a small business card.
She took the card with a frown, asking the question that had been bothering her from the moment their paths had crossed.
            “Why?”
            “Why what?”
“Why are you so determined to help me?” she demanded. “I’m a stranger.”
He held her wary gaze. “It’s what I do.”
            “A hero?”
“Something like that.” He pointed toward the business card. “My private cell number is printed on the back. Call me . . . any time, for any reason.”

Tucking the card in her purse, she crawled out of the truck and hurried to her motel room.

I am a fan of Alexandra Ivy and her Guardians of Eternity series. I was so ecstatic to see that she was introducing a new series! The story starts with the introduction of Rafe Vargas, a member of ARES Security. He and four of his comrades were prisoners of war together in a Taliban. There's Max, the forensic specialist, Teagan, the computer wizard, Hauk, the weapons specialist and sniper extraordinaire, and Lucas, the leader of the group with connections to people in high places. Did I mention that they're all drop dead gorgeous? What are the odds of a group of gorgeous military men with rock hard bodies, forming a security firm after being honorably discharged from service? Who cares! I love the banter between the guys. They are more than just teammates who suffered hell together. They became brothers in arms and they care about each other (in a manly way). :D

Back to the story, Annie White is the daughter of the Newton Slayer, who killed seven women after a ritualistic cleansing  process. The only connections were that they were all blond and mothers. After it was discovered that Annie's father was the killer, he was arrested and had his throat slit while in a holding cell. The sheriff discovered the bodies of the women in the bomb shelter of Annie's family home. The sheriff also discovered Annie blindfolded and tied to a chair. Annie's father was knocked unconscious next to the bodies. After this came to light and Annie's father dies in his cell, Annie was institutionalized and later put into foster care. Fifteen years later, Annie makes her way back to Newton for closure on the whole ordeal. Unfortunately, women have been disappearing all across Newton and paranoia is hitting the town like a tsunami. But where does Rafe come in? Rafe's grandfather was a resident of Newton until his passing. Rafe and his grandfather were estranged. Rafe's grandfather pretty much disowned Rafe's father for leaving Newton to start a new life. Since his grandfather passed, Rafe is charged with cleaning out the house to get it ready for the realtors. Rafe and Annie run into each other at the diner and the attraction is instant. Rafe can't help, but insert himself in Annie's path as she tries to figure out who is behind the disappearances. There are plenty of plot twists to keep the story interesting and IMO, this was a solid start to a new series.

As much as I enjoyed the story, I only gave this book 4 stars mainly because of the quickness of Annie and Rafe's love story. I'm as much of a romantic as any other girl, but the main story takes place over a few days; at most a week. While the story did progress quickly enough to follow the ups and downs in the plot, I just felt that it was too quick for any love to form between the pair for it to be believable. They do have good chemistry, but it takes more than mutual attraction and lust to make a relationship. Rafe was ready to take Annie back to Texan ranch to have and to hold and they just had sex! It's not a big deal, but it stood out.

4 stars!

Book Review: Make You Burn by Megan Crane

at 11/28/2015 11:28:00 PM 0 comments

Meet the Deacons of Bourbon Street, bad boy bikers who are hell on wheels—and heaven between the sheets. Megan Crane revs up an irresistible new series co-written with Rachael Johns, Jackie Ashenden, and Maisey Yates.

Sean “Ajax” Harding’s oaths are inked into his skin. Once second-in-command of the Deacons of Bourbon Street motorcycle club, he left New Orleans to protect the brotherhood, and only the death of his beloved mentor, Priest Lombard, could lure him back. Walking into the old hangout gives him a familiar thrill—especially when he gets an eyeful of the bar’s delectable new owner. A wild ride with her is just the welcome Ajax needs. Then he realizes that she’s Priest’s daughter, all grown up and totally off limits.

Sophie Lombard loved her father, not his lifestyle. She’s done with bikers . . . until Ajax roars into town—arrogant, tough, and sexy as ever. And although he treats her like the Catholic schoolgirl he once knew, Sophie’s daydreams tend to revolve around sin. With the very real possibility of heartbreak looming, Sophie knows better than to get too close to an outlaw. But every touch from Ajax is steamier than the Louisiana bayou—and heat like this may just be worth getting burned.

WOW! I was so blown away by this book. I bought this on a whim because it was only 99¢ and as luck would have it, I was given the opportunity to review the second book in the series. I had already read the second book without realizing it, but I felt that I would have understood past events more quickly if I had read the books in order; though it's entirely possible to read the books individually. This book series is written as a collaboration of four authors: Megan Crane, Rachael Johns, Jackie Ashenden, and Maisey Yates. There are four books in total and each book features one of the brothers of the Deacons of Bourbon Street MC club. In this book, we meet Sean “Ajax” Harding, the club's VP. He and three others return from exile after they hear news of the club president's death. Despite being exiled for the past decade, Ajax is still loyal to the club and is disgusted with the club's subsequent decline in reputation and members. After the major four members were exiled, the club president, Priest, tried the get the club to go legitimate. Some members didn't like that and either joined the rival MC called "The Ministry" or quit altogether. Out of the four exiled members, Ajax and Blue are still loyal to the club. However, Cash and Prince, have moved on with their lives and started legitimate careers. They just want to pay their respects and go back to their everyday normal lives. Too bad Ajax and Blue are having none of that.

Sophie, Priest's only daughter, is running the Priory, the club's legit bar. Although her relationship with her father was unconventional, they loved each other and his death is hitting her hard. When she runs into Ajax, there's explosive chemistry between them and it wasn't long before they were banging each other's brains out. As unromantic as that sounds, the intimate scenes between these two was hotttttt! From the start, Sophie admits that part of her always resented the fact that her father always put the club before her, but another part also wanted his attention and loved the club atmosphere. When news confirms that Priest's death was shady as all get out, Ajax is hell bent on finding out what really happened to Priest. The story itself earned a 3.5 star rating, but the ultra sexy sex scenes gave it the boost to a 4.5. I gave this book 5 stars because of Ajax and how in touch he is with his emotions. I just love guys who can go from bad ass alpha biker to loving teddy bear. ;)

5 stars!

About the Author

Yes, I write under two names. It's me penning the story whether I am wearing my Caitlin hat or my Megan hat. Yes, readers will see a lot of similarities in the writing. No, I don't get confused. I'm a Gemini. I like duality.

When I started writing Harlequin Presents my other writing was still considered Chick Lit. (Yes, it was that long ago.) For a whole host of reasons, I thought it made sense to make a clear distinction between the two kinds of stories I was telling. Time went on and I shifted more to romance, but still, Harlequin Presents are a very particular kind of love story. I think it makes sense to keep them under the Caitlin Crews banner. Everything else I write is Megan Crane, which has the bonus feature of actually being the name I answer to in public! Try it next time you see me. I answer to Caitlin too, but it takes a minute.

I discovered my first romance novel at the age of twelve in a bargain bin at the local five and dime. It involved swashbuckling pirates and grand adventures on the open sea, but even better: a heroine with a mind of her own and a seriously mouthwatering, masterful hero who swept her away no matter how clever she was. I was immediately smitten with all kinds of romantic themes, to the detriment of my middle school social life. (I was born in Texas and raised in New Jersey, which means I am genetically and geographically predisposed to big hair and broad gestures. You can see the conflict.)

I had grand plans to star on Broadway-preferably in Evita, just like the great Patti LuPone, who I was lucky enough to see perform in New York City more than once as a child. Sadly, my inability to wow audiences with my singing voice required a backup plan (this despite the fact that I have seen Les Miserables 15 times. If you count the movie and various PBS specials, then up that to 20. Yes, really.)

I launched myself into academics instead. This was not a good fit for someone who liked lounging about and reading books a lot more than dissecting them in classrooms, but did allow me to live in England for half a decade. As a result, I developed in a deep addiction to travel, and there are few things I love more than taking off on my next adventure. Whether in real life or through my books; I'll take either.

I didn't find my own hero for a little while there, but I had my romances to keep me warm. I spent many, many Saturdays in badly-heated used book stores throughout the greater New York Metropolitan Area, stocking up on the books of authors who would become auto-buys in later years (and still are!), immersed in all things romance novels. I read romances everywhere, in public and private and without fake covers to hide the titles of the books from view, because I'm a rebel like that. For some reason, it took me a while to figure out that I ought to write the books I loved the most.

But some 50 books in, I'm still plotting my Broadway debut.

Blog Tour Book Review: Surviving Ice by K.A. Tucker

Surviving Ice - Tour banner
We are absolutely thrilled to bring you the Review & Excerpt Tour for K.A. Tucker’s SURVIVING ICE! SURVIVING ICE is a standalone romantic suspense novel and is the fourth book in K.A. Tucker’s Burying Water Series, published by Atria, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

Surviving Ice - Cover

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths series and Burying Water—which Kirkus Reviews called “a sexy, romantic, gangster-tinged page-turner”—returns with a new novel packed with romance, plot twists, and psychological suspense.
Ivy Lee, a talented tattoo artist who spent the early part of her twenties on the move, is looking for a place to call home. She thinks she might have finally found it working in her uncle’s tattoo shop in San Francisco. But all that changes when a robbery turns deadly, compelling her to pack up her things yet again.
When they need the best, they call him. That’s why Sebastian Riker is back in California, cleaning up the mess made after a tattoo shop owner with a penchant for blackmail got himself shot. But it’s impossible to get the answers he needs from a dead body, leaving him to look elsewhere. Namely, to the twenty-something-year-old niece who believes this was a random attack. Who needs to keep believing that until Sebastian finds what he’s searching for.
Ivy has one foot out of San Francisco when a chance encounter with a stranger stalls her departure. She’s always been drawn to intense men, so it’s no wonder that she now finds a reason to stay after all, quickly intoxicated by his dark smile, his intimidating strength, and his quiet control.
That is, until Ivy discovers that their encounter was no accident—and that their attraction could be her undoing.

EXCERPT #3
“We’re closed!” I yell, whipping my head around, my anger at myself for not locking it launched.
A man I’ve never seen before stands motionless in front of me, amusement in his eyes as he stares. Nothing else about him betrays his thoughts, though. His stance is still and relaxed, his angular face perfectly composed.
My heart begins to race with unease.
“I’d like some work done.” His voice is deep, almost gravelly, his tone even and calm.
I climb to my feet, because I don’t like anyone towering over me. And because his piercing eyes unsettle me. Unlike the two-hundred-and-fifty-pound biker who just left, this guy makes me nervous. The wrench is still in my fist, and I grip it tightly now. “I’m not working today.”
“Tomorrow.”
“I’m not working tomorrow either.” The corner of his mouth twitches as we face off against each other. “When will you be working again, then?”
He’s patient. It’s annoying. But he also seems very interested in this tattoo, which makes it less likely that he’s here to hurt me. I relax my grip on the wrench. “I won’t be. Not here, anyway. Black Rabbit is closed for good, or at least until it opens under new ownership.”
He pauses, his shrewd gaze weighing so heavily on me that I finally have to look away from him. I feel like a sophomore year science class dissection—the unfortunate amphibian donated in the name of education. “That’s a shame.”
Either he’s not from around here or he hasn’t read the news. Or he’s one of those sickos who gets a kick out of crime scenes. “It is.” What’s really a shame is that this guy didn’t come a few weeks ago, because I gladly would have agreed to mark his entire body with my hands then.
On first-glance impression, he actually reminds me of Jesse Welles, the love of my teenage life, though I’d never admit that to anyone. This guy’s eyes are lighter—a cool chocolate rather than near-black—but they have that same intensity; a similar smirk sits atop his full lips. He, too, has dark hair coating his hard, masculine jaw; it’s just sculpted to a perfect short beard. He’s taller and broader than Jesse. Harder looking, not just by a few years of age but as if by life itself. That’s a little concerning, given the kind of life that Jesse Welles has already lived.
But there’s something distinctly different about this guy, too. I can’t quite place it, but I can feel it. Something slightly “off.” Or maybe it’s just this place that’s making everything in my life feel off—after all, my mind is still in a haze over Ned’s death. The last thing I should be thinking about right now is this guy or Jesse or getting laid.

I have been in a reading slump for a while now and this book got me out of it. From start to finish, I was captivated by the story. I finished this book in a matter of hours. The girl: Ivy, an artist with wanderlust and commitment issues, who's entire life is torn to bits when her uncle/boss is murdered in his tattoo parlor. By chance or Fate, Ivy walked into her uncle's shop at the wrong time. Ned, her uncle was very influential in nurturing her artistic passions, unlike her traditional parents. His death was a harsh reality check. The assailants shot her uncle and took off with some cash and the security tapes. The cops don't have any leads on his assailants and what their motives were for killing her. It all looks like Ned owed some bad people some  money and this was the consequence of not paying up, but something wasn't right. The guy: Sebastian aka Ice (like ice water in your veins?). Sent by his boss to watch Ivy and find a VHS tape (I remember those :) with damning evidence against Alliance, his "security firm." The first moment they meet, there's no instant attraction, something I really appreciated. Their attraction for each other grows over time and though the timeline is still a little fast, Sebastian and Ivy are like two side of the same coin with great chemistry. Both have secrets, know how to keep a poker face and never stay in one place for very long. What started out as an easy job becomes complicated when the pair start falling for each other and end up becoming more. Of course, with the tape's location still in question, trained killers have set their sights on Ivy. Overall, I loved this book and how it ended perfectly. This book seems like a stand-alone, but there were some mention of previous characters from the previous books written in a similar style. Be sure to check those out too!

5 stars
