Blog Tour Book Review: Amber to Ashes by Gail McHugh

at 6/19/2015 12:00:00 AM 0 comments

They were a storm I never saw coming, an unforeseen heartbreak on the edge of a dangerous cliff.

Amber Moretti’s life changes in the span of minutes. An orphaned outsider, she is desperate to start fresh the moment she walks onto campus. In the time it takes to cross the university’s dining hall, she meets two men who bring color, air, and light to her darkened world.

They became my addiction, each a needle to my next hit, my high.

Brock Cunningham’s appeal is dizzying, a potent force Amber can’t deny. A green-eyed smooth talker, he instantly attracts Amber. It doesn’t take long for him to consume her every thought, her every breath.

Ryder Ashcroft, a blue-eyed, tattooed, and pierced bad boy, turns Amber off immediately—that is, until he kisses her, stealing a piece of her heart, her soul.

They were as opposite as fire and ice, yet I ached for them equally.

Never knowing she could be broken down in so many unexpectedly beautiful yet petrifying ways, Amber finds herself falling for both men.

Immoral? Maybe. I say undeniable. Uncontained.

But one devastating event changes everything, shattering each of their lives...and Amber isn’t sure she can recover from it.

My Review

WOW. First off, I'm Team Ryder. Right off the bat, he captured my attention. I've read Gail's previous works, Collide and Pulse, and I was already a fan, but with this book, I just fell in love with Ryder. Despite the whole love triangle-esque love story, I really enjoyed this book. This book was a roller coaster of emotion, sexual expression, love, jealously and passion. Our leading lady is no stranger to loss and being a victim is something she's familiar with. Amber, as a heroine, is just as broken on the inside as the two leading heroes. Amber sees her college life as a new way to start over and become a new person. During the first days of college, Amber walks into the dining area at school and trips over a bag and falls into the lap of Ryder. Tall, hot, tattooed bad boy with a joker side, he and Amber have an instant connection... until he opens his mouth and earns himself a slap in the face. Next, we meet Brock. Super down to earth, all American, beautiful man-candy. She's the complete opposite of Ryder, but there's an edge to him that Amber is drawn to. With an instant connection to two different men, what's a girl to do? With Amber's history of sexual conquests, she picks the safer choice and dates him. Ironically, he's just as dangerous as the other one. As the story progress, Amber is caught between two magnetic personalities and the more time she sends with them, the more she loses herself to the passion and pleasure. Near the end of the book, we meet shady characters who will threaten everything our trio holds dear. I absolutely loved everything about this book. I can't wait for for eventual sequel.

5 freakin' stars!

Release Day Blitz: Sidelined by Emma Hart

at 3/03/2015 03:00:00 PM 0 comments

Three people. Three
motives. Three reasons.
When the game leaves the field in the second book in the USA
Today bestselling BY HIS GAME series and mixes with sex, lies, and betrayal,
the future isn't the only thing on the line...

Macey Kelly has sworn off men. Unless they’re going to zip
in and out of her apartment—and her vagina—quicker than they can give her an
orgasm, she’s not interested. Finding out her boyfriend of three years got her
cousin pregnant was a total confidence knock. Luckily for Macey, confidence is
something she has in abundance, so all Mitch’s asshole move
did was make her pretty cynical toward men.

The last thing Jack Carr needs at the start of the season is
for a dark-haired, sexy as sin, gyspyesque beauty to be consuming his thoughts.
Football is his life, which leaves no time for girls. Unless they’re the love
‘em and leave ‘em girls. Becoming one of the best running backs the league has
ever seen by racking up the yards is his top priority… not bedding Macey Kelly, despite her affinity for blow jobs and total sexual abandon.
Avoiding each other is the perfect solution, but when your
best friends are in a serious living together kind of relationship, that isn’t
always an option. Sometimes, sex on tap is the easiest option. And the
sweetest.

Until Mitch shows up with a bombshell that could shatter
Macey’s perfectly carved out life. It’s been a year, but he isn’t giving her
up, not now he has a chance at winning her back. And he knows her buttons.
Every single one of them.
Unfortunately for him, Jack Carr isn’t a loser. The star
running back has his eye on the Vince Lombardi—and on Macey. But seeing her
hanging between them both isn’t something he’s down with, not when he discovers
why she’s so against anything more-ish, as she puts it.Macey quickly realizes
she’s the ball being passed between two desperate yet opposing teams, and that
only one of them can score the touchdown. But will the winner be the guy she
lived with and loved for three years, or will the winner be the guy who
understands her and makes her body come alive?
In this game, someone will be sidelined, and calling the
play isn’t always as easy as it seems.

(SIDELINED is a full-length, standalone novel. It's not necessary to read BLINDSIDED before this book, but it is advised.)

EXCERPT

“Now tell me,” I whisper, curving my arms around her tiny
body. “Did he ever want you like I do? In three years, baby, he ever desire you
the way I do? He ever make you come as hard as I do? He ever drive you to
distraction with insane need? He ever stop for one second and worship your body
like the fucking temple I know it is?”
Macey exhales quietly, but it’s the kind of breath I never
cared about before. The kind of breath that’s full of unspoken words. Unspoken
words I want fucking spoken.
“Didn’t catch that.”
“No,” she breathes out. “No. Never.”
My arms go around her body as I move in front of her and
clasp her against me. My erection rapidly deflates with the words I’m about to
speak.
“Then, babe, my part in his bullshit game is almost done,
except now, I’m calling my play. You go to him, and you let him think we’re
done. That he has a chance. You see what he can do to you. You see if he can
give you half the things I can—and I don’t even mean materially, M. I mean
forever. If you can spend a few days with your ex and truly believe he can
pleasure you like I can, treasure you like I can, then I’ll respect your
decision. But, baby…” I sink my fingers into her hair and tug her head back so
her eyes crash into mine with fire and apprehension mixing together. “Baby, if
you think he can love you like I can, then get ready for a fight to the death.”
She freezes in my arms. “Jack.”
“I’m not gonna stand here with your naked body against mine
and tell you I love you just to convince you to tell him where to go. I don’t
love you, M. But I could. I know I could. You’re more fucking perfect for me
than anything I’ve ever known. I won’t lie to you, baby. I crave your body and
I crave you, but I don’t love you.”
Her eyes flicker with something indiscernible, but I hold
her gaze.
“But just imagine—if I can make you feel physically what he
can only dream of, just think of how I could love you one day.”
She drops her eyes and rests her face in my chest. My words
hit her hard—I know they did. I’m not fucking dumb. But they didn’t hit her the
way they would most girls. Right now, I know Macey couldn’t give a shit whether
or not I love her. All she cares about is the fact that she’s the tug toy
between two guys. She’s the ball being passed from end zone to end zone,
quarterback to wide receiver. All she gives a shit about is that she makes the
right decision in the end.
All she gives a shit about is that, when it’s her turn to
call the play, she calls it right.
“Somethin’ you should know about me.” My words buzz along
her jaw with my lips. “Football is my life. That isn’t ever gonna change, but
that doesn’t mean that’s all there is to it.”
“Jack,” she whispers, her fingers digging into my sides.
“Three things you never cared to ask about me that I’m gonna
tell you anyway.” I hover my mouth above hers, my eyes steely and intent on
hers. “I play the game hard. I fuck harder. And I love even fucking harder than
that.”

“Prove it,” she whispers. “I’ve seen the first two. Prove the last one.”

From Emma Hart, the New York Times bestselling author of the
Game series, comes a brand new series where the game is realer, the tension is
tighter, the sex is hotter, and the stakes are the highest of all…

Two people. Two agendas. Two games.
What happens when the out-there It-Boy of football meets the
secret It-Girl of fashion?
As the daughter of Hollywood’s sweetheart, Leah Veronica
can’t even buy a coffee without finding her face on a magazine stand, so it’s no
wonder she’s launching her first fashion line in secret. With it debuting at
New York Fashion Week in just under a month, extra time in the spotlight is the
last thing she needs.
The son of the best quarterback the league has ever seen,
filling legendary shoes as the L.A. Vipers’ quarterback was inevitable for
Corey Jackson. So was meeting Leah Veronica—the first girl to hand him his ass
without putting a hair out of place.
Getting the handsome, prickly blonde into his bed becomes
his number one goal. But getting the sexy, over-confident footballer the hell
away from her becomes Leah’s—at least until she realizes the best way to do
that is to give him what he wants.
If only it was that simple.
When Corey discovers who she is, and private photos of
Hollywood’s finest find their way online, everything they thought they knew is
thrown into disarray.
And when secrets are exposed and hearts are shattered, they
have to figure out if they’ve been blindsided by love or reality, and if it’s
worth running the extra yard to win the game they never meant to play.

Book Review & Giveaway: The Professional by Kresley Cole

at 2/01/2015 12:37:00 AM 2 comments

He makes the rules…

Mafiya enforcer Aleksei “The Siberian” Sevastyan’s loyalty to his boss knows no bounds, until he meets the boss’s long-lost daughter, a curvy, feisty redhead who haunts his mind and heats his blood like no other. Ordered to protect her, Aleksei will do anything to possess her as well—on his own wicked terms.

Rules are made to be broken…

Grad student Natalie Porter had barely recovered from her first sight of the dark and breathtaking Sevastyan before the professional enforcer whisks her away to Russia, thrusting her into a world of extreme wealth and wanton pleasures. Every day under his protection leads her deeper under his masterful spell.

Are you ready to play?

Yet all is not as it seems. To remove Natalie from an enemy’s reach, Sevastyan spirits her into hiding. From an opulent palace in Russia to the decadent playgrounds of the mega-wealthy in Paris, the two lovers will discover that even their darkest—and most forbidden—fantasies can come true…

My Review

I absolutely loved this book.  I have always loved every single book Kresley Cole has ever written. Who has two thumbs and a major crush on KC? This girl! I remember my first book like it was yesterday. I was at my local library going through their bargain bin and picked up A Hunger Like No Other, the second book in her Immortals After Dark series. I literally devoured the book in a couple of hours. I could not put it down. I searched and borrow every single Kresley Cole book that was available and absolutely fell in love with her guy characters...I mean, her writing. No matter what genre she wrote her books in, I went into it with high expectations and always become emotionally invested in her fictional characters' lives. Needless to say, her descriptive writing and storytelling are always on par.

Let's get into The Professional. We have our main girl Natalie Porter, an overworked grad student and a farm girl from Nebraska. Someone rescue this girl! Nat and a few of her buddies are drinking at a bar and in comes our oh-so-sexily rugged prizefighter/mafiya enforcer, Aleksandr Sevastyan. Nat gets up the courage to hit on him and is humiliatingly shut down. Yikes. But the story doesn't end there, folks. Nat heads back to her place and lo and beholds, "The Siberian" shows up and orders her to pack a bag. Apparently, Nat's biological father is the head of a mafiya organization and wants his enforcer to bring her to him ASAP. For Nat and Sevastyan, things aren't that simple.

Despite, some mixed signals, the attraction between Sevastyan and Nat is palpable. Naughty scenes are littered throughout the book (thank you KC). In one fatal moment (not really shocking for me, I kinda saw it coming), the dynamic of the mafiya is changed and the pair must team up to survive.  As the story progressed, I felt like the relationship between Natalie and Sevastyan developed at a pace that bounced between steady and the speed of light. The sexy parts were absolutely filthy, much appreciated, and well written. ;) It's probably bias of me to write a review for KC since I just love her and her stories! I can't wait for the next book she writes.

5 stars!!!

For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.

When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.

Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.

As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.

That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.

Unless she ruins him first.

***WARNING*** This book deals with drug cartels and as such it contains a lot of sex and violence and some violent sex. It can get pretty ugly, pretty dark and pretty crazy. There is drug use, abuse, a bit of torture and dubious consent. The hero is not a hero and the villains...well, they're even worse. If this sort of thing bothers you, please do not read. This ain't no cupcake farting unicorn kind of book***

Excerpt
There was a strange moment of silence and I concentrated hard, trying to hear more than the obvious. They were all waiting. Waiting for the order. Waiting for the man in charge to speak.

He did.

It came from the left of me. His voice was cool, calm and collected. I didn’t have to see to know who had taken me. The man I’d heard so much about. The man I’d been taught to fear.

“Gentleman,” he said and I could almost feel his infamous eyes on my body, “remove the bag.”

There was a rustle and my face was immediately met with cool air that seized my lungs and bright lights that blinded me. I scrunched up my face, afraid to look, to see. Now it was all so real and I wanted to stay in the dark.

“Who did this?”

Suddenly cool hands were at my swollen cheek and I flinched.

“Who did this?” my captor repeated, an edge to his level voice, his cigar-laced breath on my face.

“Sorry,” Franco mumbled. “It was the only way to quiet her.”

A heavy pause filled the room like deadweight. Finally the fingers came away from my skin and my body relaxed momentarily. I felt the man stand in front of me, bending over so he was in my face, the spicy scent of tea and tobacco emanating off of him.

“Look at me Luisa Reyes.”

Chavez, I thought to myself, I will always be Luisa Chavez.

“Darling, aren’t you curious to where you are?”

“My name is Luisa Chavez,” I said. I opened my eyes to see golden ones staring right back at me. It was like looking at an eagle. “And I know where I am. I know who you are. You are Javier Bernal.”

He raised his brow in amusement and nodded. I’d seen his picture before, on the news. There was only one and that was his mugshot but even in that photo, his eyes made an impression on you. They saw right into your depths and made you question yourself. He was one of the men whom Salvador feared, even though Salvador had more power. He was the one I had been told to watch out for, the supposed reason why I’d always been locked in the compound or escorted by the local police to go shopping.

And yet here I was, tied to a chair in a cold, leaking basement with nothing in it except five cartel members, a video camera and a knife that lay on top of a stool in front of me.

All of that for nothing. I could escape Salvador but I could never escape the cartels.

I had asked for this fate.

“You know why you’re here,” Javier said with deliberation, straightening up in his sharp black suit. He walked over to the stool, swiping up the knife, and glancing at me over his shoulder. “Don’t you?”

I could only breathe. I wanted to look at the others, at Este, at Franco, at the two other mystery men, but I was frozen in his gaze like a cow in headlights.

“What is the knife for?” I asked, my throat painfully dry.

“You’ll find out after,” he said. “It is for your husband. For your Salvador.” He stepped to the side and waved his arm at the camera. “And this is also for him.”

He eyed someone over my shoulder and gave a sharp nod. I heard a rip from behind and a piece of duct tape was placed over my mouth. I squirmed helplessly and the lights in the basement dimmed. The men stepped to the side while Javier went behind the video camera. A white light came off the front of it and bathed me in an eerie glow.

Javier cleared his throat, his face covered in shadow and said loudly, projecting to the camera, “This is Luiza Reyes, former beauty queen of the Baja State and property of Salvador Reyes. Salvador, we have your wife and we have a long list of demands, demands which I know you can meet. I expect full cooperation in this matter, or she dies in the next seven days. If she’s lucky. I’ll give you some time to think about what you’re willing to give up for her. Then we’ll be contacting you. Good bye.”

The light on the camera switched off but the rest of the room remained dim.

“I hope your husband checks his emails often. It would be a shame to have to put this on YouTube.”

There was a smirk on his face at that as he slowly walked toward me, the knife glinting in his hand. His eyes burned through the shadows, then grew somber.

He held up the knife. “I think it’s only going to hurt the first time.”

My eyes focused on the silver of the blade but the terror inside me grew too strong and my urge to breathe through the duct tape became too difficult. My lungs seized in panic, pulsing dots appeared in my vision. I felt a hand on my collarbone, gripping the edge of my blouse and then everything went black.

Seven Years

(Seven Series, Bk #1)
By Dannika Dark

Blurb:

Seven years ago, my world ended.

Seven years later, my new life began.

It's been seven years since Lexi Knight lost her brother in a tragic accident. On the anniversary of his death, her brother's best friend shows up unexpectedly - a man she hasn't seen since the funeral. He is no longer the boy Lexi once knew, but a dangerous-looking man with tattoos and dark secrets. He broke her trust and abandoned her family, yet what he reveals makes it impossible to stay angry. Lexi has been secretly infatuated with Austin since childhood, so finding out he's a Shifter just makes him sexier. Dammit.

Austin Cole has returned to the city where he grew up, and just in time. He's lived a hard life these past seven years, and the shadows of his past are threatening to destroy Lexi's family. It's time that she learned the truth about her brother, but there is a shocking twist that Austin never saw coming. Now he must protect her family when her mother and sister wind up in mortal danger. Will Lexi learn to accept the truth about who he is, and can Austin salvage a relationship from the ruins of their past?

At first I thought this book was a contemporary love story between childhood friends who were ripped apart by the tragic death of a mutual left turn, but after a couples chapters passed, things took a bit of a turn into "what the hell?" territory. Lexi is a smart and capable young woman who is still grieving over the death of her older brother Wes. Life has not been kind to Lexi and her family and it clear to me that despite the weight of the world on her shoulders, Lexi managed to pull herself together and keep her family strong. She works at a candy store despite her smarts. When she heads home to her mother's place to mourn her brother's death anniversary, a twist of fate pulls Austin Cole back into town. From all accounts, this dude is smokin' hot! :) At first the over-protective feeling I got from him and his actions towards Lexi was due to a obligatory feeling of family. Austin was Wes' best friend and now he's back in town after disappearing after the death of her brother.

I loved the chemistry between Lexi and Austin. And it turns out that this book is just a branched off story from the Mageri universe, but from a different point of view. I loved the underlying plot of Lexi's past. This book is definitely a great addition to the Mageri universe and I recommend it to anyone who likes a nice peek into the Mageri world.

Promo Post: Excerpt of Rotten by JL Brooks

Growing up on the outskirts of Las Vegas as the daughter of notorious strip club owner, Stephen Knox, and a mother who abandoned her at birth, life was less than kind to a young Antoinette.

After a failed teenage suicide attempt, Toni hit the road in search of a life free of undeserved cruelty and any resemblance to her past.

Years later, Toni is lost in a dead end marriage and makes a painful confession that sends her back to the one place she always wanted to escape. But can she really right the wrongs that haunt her? Toni soon finds that the only place where things stay the same is in your mind.

When her path crosses with David Stark, childhood playmate turned one night stand, she cannot deny the spike in temperature she feels every time he's near or the scorching dreams that flood her at night.

Digging through the years of heartache, Toni soon finds herself torn between the man she is committed to and the one who has always held her heart. As each layer unfolds before her, she discovers the root cause of her pain. Always believing the source was external, nothing could prepare her for the truth.

*This book contains sexual content and adult language. Intended for readers 17+.

Excerpt

As I cracked the old bathroom door open, steam rushed out in vapor clouds before me. David looked up as I approached him in nothing but a towel. Still not saying anything, I used my ankle to kick his knees apart. He looked at me oddly until the towel dropped to the floor in a large heap of cotton. Crawling up onto his lap, I used the palm of my hand to push his forehead back into the fabric of the sofa and pressed my naked body into his chest.
“Are you going to run away again?” I whispered.
His hands tentatively caressed the damp skin on the back of my thighs while licking his lips. “No ma’am.”
