About the Author

This is the segment where you learn a little more about who I am, so here's what I can tell you:  I drink copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to my laptop while writing. These are two healthy habits I have no intention of breaking. I'm a transplant living in the south, but I was born in the 70's to a military dad who moved us around the world.

When I'm not writing (which is all the time), I'm hunting down Indie music, watching movies, reading, eating Tex-Mex, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the Internet. I have a relaxed, easy-going personality and don't like drama. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I'm not sure which).

Throughout my life, I've had insomnia. Counting sheep never worked and eventually I would imagine those sheep were the sole source of food after an apocalyptic battle where only thousands survived. I made up stories in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I got so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down - creating short stories, and then I discovered my love for poetry.

It's almost embarrassing how many spiral notebooks and stacks of paper I have of poetry and lyrics.

Another passion: digital art. I design all my book covers, marketing, and series art. I'm a very visual person and pursued photography as an avid hobby for many years.

I am not a YA author (I feel like I have to state this only because I've had a few people ask), but I think it's wonderful there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal.

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to do: giving my characters a pulse through writing full time. I focus on adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels and I enjoy blending genres to break out of the confines of predictability.

But it's what I love to do.

-Danni

Blog Tour Post: Gravity by Dannika Dark

at 6/09/2013 11:30:00 PM 0 comments
When a choice is made, it will forever alter the course of our destiny. It cannot be undone, for fate is a river changing direction and carving away the bed of our hearts like everlasting fractures.
A difficult past has left Silver broken, but she is learning to trust again through Logan Cross, a Chitah who has convinced her that a dangerous man can change. Their conviction for each other will be put to the ultimate test when an old nemesis reappears and flips her world upside down. Will Logan be able to tame the animal within, or will he succumb to his impulsive nature?
The ongoing investigation into Breed experiments unveils a shocking secret about Silver’s past. Standing at a fork in the road, Silver is forced to make a decision. Each comes with consequence, and there is no turning back.

WOW! This book was awesome! Full of angst, pain, revenge, rage, despair, love and mystery, Gravity was such a good read. The book starts off with Silver, our leading lady and main protag. Silver is still learning the ins and outs of her abilities. The plot line to this volume is a little wonky, but it all makes sense in the end with the mini plot lines converge into the main plot line. All of the characters you love make an appearance! I have to say that my favorite guy is Justus and in this volume of the Mageri series, he gets an interesting complication in his life and I just loved how he came to terms with it! He's just so... HOT! (hahaha). In his own little plotline he tangles with a strong-willed Relic named Page. She was in the previous books when Silver was bitten by a Chitah and she was the one who helped heal her. I hope

In Gravity, a lot of stuff goes down...like seriously! We learn more about the labs and scientists that performed experiments on fetuses like Silver and the new info will shock you! duh duh duhhhhh! The gang are trying their best to track down one of the lead scientists in the mad experiment. Meanwhile, a coup is in the works and the guy we all hate is back! Who? You'll have to read the book to find out! Just know that this person is responsible for a majority of the heartache between Silver and her Chitah, Logan! (sniffles) Oh, the pain! Definitely need some tissues from time to time. Definitely a lot of blood was spilled at the hands of this jerkface and he's back with a vengeance, literally!

I absolutely loved this book! I can't wait to read the next one! I give this book a rating of......

4½ stars!

Cover Reveal Blitz: Gravity by Dannika Dark

at 4/16/2013 12:00:00 AM 0 comments

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I am so happy to be a part of Dannika Dark's cover reveal for the 4th book in her Mageri series! I absolutely can't wait for this book to come out. For those of you who have yet to read the Mageri series, I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes a bit of witchcraft mixed in with steamy alphas. ;) (Drumroll) I am happy to present to you lovely readers the cover art of Gravity, book 4 in the Mageri series, along with a small blurb.

He twirled a lock of my dark hair between his fingers, bringing the soft tendril to his nose as he drew in a deep breath.
“Do I still smell like lemon cake?” I asked. My fingers wandered along the tight muscles on his arms, sliding underneath the sleeves of his light grey T-shirt.
He suddenly crouched low and ran his nose along the length of my body—close and inviting. God, I loved it when he did that.
Smelled me.
What a strange thing to love about a man. The gesture felt erotic and the tiny hairs on my arms would stand up. With each inhale, his soft purr rumbled and I pulled his face close to mine, planting a soft kiss on his warm cheek. He caged me with arms that had once climbed a thirty-foot tree with blinding speed to rescue me—his agile body leaping from branch to branch as he held me tightly to him.
“Put your mouth on mine, Little Raven. I’m ready for a taste of lemon cake,” he said in a deep and tumbling voice.
“Maybe I’m not so sweet,” I whispered, wetting my lower lip with a sweep of my tongue.
Logan’s eyes followed every movement, and he licked his lips in response. “I want your mouth… on my mouth. Do it, or else I’ll have to find something else to kiss.”

(sigh) Logan! so swoon-worthy he is. :D Since this book is the 4th one in the series, I would be remiss in my duties as a book blogger to inform you about the previous books. :) Below are book covers and synopses of the previous 3 books.

BOOK #1 of the Mageri series: Sterling

Zoë Merrick lived a less than ordinary life, until late one night, she was brutally attacked and left for dead.

A man named Adam spotted her running down the road covered in blood, and took her under his wing. Zoë didn't just survive that night - she underwent a physical transformation and acquired strange new abilities. Severed from her old life, her frustration grows as she tries to comprehend what's happening to her.

Serendipity leads her to Justus. He's handsome, arrogant, and not entirely human. Zoë learns the truth about what she is, and just how dangerous their world is for a young Mage. The only way she will understand her power is by putting her trust in this man, and accepting the protection he offers.

When her immortal freedom is threatened by the one man who has a right to claim her, Zoë learns the price of freedom...and the value of loyalty.

Blog Tour Stop: Impulse by Dannika Dark

at 12/10/2012 01:23:00 AM 6 comments

Hey there peeps! Lisa here with a special author interview post. Today I have the honor of interviewing Dannika Dark, author of the Mageri series. Dannika, welcome to the Consummate Reader. Would you like a cup of tea or coffee before we begin? [I'd love a cup of coffee] Alrighty, here you go. Now, this is only my second author interview I've ever done, so let's make it awesomesauce!

First question, when did you realize that you wanted to be a writer?

Looking back to even when I was a kid, I always wanted to be a writer. I didn’t grow up thinking that was going to be my profession, because you’re supposed to get those 9-5 office jobs with benefits and a 401K. I wrote a lot of stories about magic when I was a kid, and then it progressed to post-apocalyptic stories. The “What If” always fascinated me. However, I’ll admit that I went through a very long phase of poetry, and always imagined that this would be what I was known for. Well, except for the stint in late high school when I was going to be a lyricist for rock bands. ;-)

Do you have a muse that helps you with your Mageri series? If so, describe.

My characters are my muse. When a great character is developed, they not only can be the inspiration for the story that I’m writing, but also give me ideas for another book or series. It’s happened on numerous occasions. I’ve always had an extremely overactive imagination. Even if I’m sitting in line somewhere, my mind is making up “movie quality” scenarios that would make my wait much more interesting if they actually happened. I remember once at Jury duty spending two hours in the hallway talking to a guy about “What ifs”. We were literally sitting there making up scenes that could happen to make our day more interesting, just like a couple of kids.  I really hated being a kid and having a teacher snap me out of a daydream, telling me to focus. We should never discourage kids from using their imagination. Sometimes my characters come to life in one of my daydreams, and I carry them with me through the day. “What would Justus do?” “What would Simon do in this situation?” Having them in my pocket totally inspires me in writing out scenes and developing fresh ideas for new stories.

You've written three books for the Mageri series now, and the third one was recently released. How happy are you with readers’ responses to Impluse?

I’m doing a virtual Snoopy dance. I couldn’t be more pleased with the reviews, emails, and comments I’ve received. Each book in the series, I’m always taking chances with the storyline and characters. As a writer, you wonder how the fans will embrace each book, because sometimes a reader can be very opinionated on where they want the direction to go. But I have to say, the response has far exceeded my expectations. It’s made every process of this journey worth it.

Do you have a level of awesomeness you want to achieve when it comes to writing?

I’d love to be able to branch out into more genres. While I absolutely love the world of paranormal, I’d love to have a horror or straight fiction up my sleeve someday. I’m already mixing genres and trying to keep it versatile, but I think awesomeness would be in how many readers I could reach with my writing, and perhaps they would crossover into my other genres and give them a try. I’d love to be the gateway drug for readers to step into the world of paranormal through one of my other books. Few things are better than when I hear a reader say: “I’ve never read paranormal before, but I loved this series.”

So, as I've said, Impluse was recently released. Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Impulse is book three in The Mageri Series, which revolves around a woman who is transformed into a Mage against her will. She was once human, just like us, and suddenly discovers that a secret world of immortals exist. Vampires, Relics, Shifters… you name it. I’ve not only incorporated familiar Breeds, but developed new ones. Silver (our protagonist) is living under the care of her Ghuardian, Justus. She’s trying to figure out where she belongs in this world. In Impulse, she finds herself in a relationship that’s getting intense, but she has no idea just how intense until a truth begins to unravel. She also discovers a box that contains information that could be very dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. One man wants to know what it is, and he’s the same man who has been pursuing Silver because she has a unique energy within her that’s strong and addictive. This is an evolving storyline that continues through the series, and Impulse also reveals a lot of insight behind some of our main characters. Action, romance, passion, mystery – I think it has a little of something for everyone. Each book has subtle details that readers are beginning to pick up on during re-reads. There are lots of theories floating about, but you’ll have to wait until the next books to find out what happens next.

Excellent! Now it's time for a lightening round!

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Caramel, with swirls of caramel and chocolate chunks! Throw in toffee and I’ll be your BFF for life.

Number 1 guilty pleasure?
Watching reality cooking shows

Favorite quote from your series?
“I want your fingerprints all over me like a crime scene.”

Favorite drink? alcohol or otherwise
Strawberry Daiquiri

Audiobook or paperback?
Paperback (But I swear, if audiobooks had different actors for each character voice, I’d be all over that)

Thanks so much for having me!

Give it up for Dannika Dark!!! (clapping) Now here's a snippet from Impluse:

Both hands cupped my face and his forehead touched mine.
“I was made to protect you, female. I’ve claimed you, whether you accept it or not, and it’s an honor that I take very seriously. If any male lays an unwanted finger on you, I will break it. If you hunger, I will feed you. If you’re cold, then I will warm you with my body. If you’re taken from me, then I’ll track you. Never doubt my devotion to you.” He gripped my head firmly. “I once gave a woman my heart, because that’s all I had to give. But you, Silver, you’re the pulse that keeps me alive. I was a soft man once, but no more. I don’t know if you can accept the man that I’ve become, because all I have to offer you is my life.
