My Review

Wow. This book was not what I expected. I have not read many New Adult books, but this book was certainly in a class of its own. There are minor spoilers in my review so be wary. The blurb makes the story sound like a forbidden lovers' tryst (which it is), but with a very high school background. At first, Maise came off as a very cynical young girl who is blessed (insert sarcasm here) with a drug dealer of a mother and a boatload of daddy/abandonment issues. As I read on, I found her to be "older" in body and mind. She is not without her faults and fears. In the book, she is described as a Snow White look-alike. Long, luxurious hair with milky white skin and a major body. She knows she's a bombshell, not in her own opinion, but by what she perceives from the reactions to the people around her. When she looks in the mirror, she sees a pretty girl, but in her mind, a stranger stares back at her. Guys want to bang her, girls want to rip her throat out. Knowing what kind of sexual appeal she has to the opposite sex, she's not afraid of using her charms. Coming from a broken home, she is more experienced in the seedy underbelly of the real world than most of her classmates. She's passionate about films and wants to get the hell out of dodge. She knows what she wants, but she straddles the line between being the girl everyone assumes she is or her true self. 

Now, let's get to the good stuff. At a carnival, she meets Evan, a smokin' hot 32 year old. I know what you're thinking. How old is Maise? She's newly 18 and yes, the age gap is a little disconcerting, but the chemistry between these two is explosive! One thing leads to another and they get intimate...in his car. Don't be slut-shaming just yet! Maize is an experienced girl, but this one moment with Evan was nothing like she ever felt before and that scares the crap out of her. From the moment she wakes up, she's a consummate actress, projecting a facade to the world around her. With Evan, she feels striped and overwhelmed with emotion. Now, about Evan. Yes, he's an older guy, but that's not part of the potential problem.

As I've previously said, Maise's interests lies in film. Just one more year of high school before she can get the hell out of her old life and into a new one. Unbeknowst to her, Evan turns out to be the film class teacher. He's just as shocked as she was! The way he approached her was different too. Instead of accusing her of seducing him and blaming their current predicament on her, he takes (or attempts to) take some responsibility for their moment of bliss. It's just too bad Maise is having none of that. Logically speaking, despite the age gap, she was 18 and he was not her teacher yet. They try to keep it professional, but they can't stop thinking about the other. They continue to have a relationship, but use copious amounts of discretion. No matter how you look at it, this seems solid right? The answer is "who gives a crap?" A scandal like this will always eventually blow up and spread like wildfire, but the devil is in the details so you'll have to read it for yourselves. 

There were other players on the field besides Evan and Maise. There's Wesley, the film nerd with the hots for Maise. A rival for Evan's affections and queen of the mean girls sets her sight on bagging the new hottie on campus and is not afraid to play dirty. Not to mention the mother and crapload of problems. Definitely a lot of twists and turns that will make you want more! All in all I really enjoyed my first taste of New Adult.
