ARC Review: Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews

at 8/24/2020 07:30:00 PM

Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times bestselling author, continues her spellbinding series set in the Hidden Legacy world where magic controls everything…except the hearts of those who wield it.

As Prime magic users, Catalina Baylor and her sisters have extraordinary powers—powers their ruthless grandmother would love to control. Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state, but that has risks as well. When House Baylor is under attack and monsters haunt her every step, Catalina is forced to rely on handsome, dangerous Alessandro Sagredo, the Prime who crushed her heart.

The nightmare that Alessandro has fought since childhood has come roaring back to life, but now Catalina is under threat. Not even his lifelong quest for revenge will stop him from keeping her safe, even if every battle could be his last. Because Catalina won't rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that's tearing their world apart.

SPOILERS ABOUND

Wooooo! This book was an emotional roller coaster ride. The events of Emerald Blaze take place six months after the end of Sapphire Flames. Catalina Baylor, Head of House Baylor and Prime Siren, is adapting to life's punches. After her almost relationship with Alessandro Sagredo, Catalina is living her life. Her duties as the Deputy Warden of Texas and Head of House Baylor keeps her busy. A case involving a trained monkey leads to a monstrous discovery. New mutant creatures are making their homes in the Pit, the sunken swamp habitat formerly known as Jersey Village. Suspecting that the creatures are magic-made, Catalina takes over a related case as a cover for her main investigation. The related case involves the death of Felix Morton, a Prime Geokinetic. House Morton and four other Houses signed a business contract to bankroll a construction project to makeover the Pit. Then, Felix Morton is found dead on the worksite. The Head of House Morton hired Montgomery Investigative Industries to find out who killed his son

Once again, Catalina and Alessandro will have to work together to find the culprit, but navigating the Prime infested waters is only half the challenge. The creatures of the Pit do not like their habitat being disturbed and they are fighting back. Secrets abound and plots unfold as Catalina and Alessandro become closer. This book is the second book in Catalina's story arc and her character is more fleshed out than before. She's smart, deadly, and every inch a Prime. I so enjoyed her interactions with her family. With a few close calls and a dastardly plot to ensnare the Baylors, Emerald Blaze was thrilling and satisfying. Enemies are around every corner and it'll take everything Catalina has to stay ahead of the game.

5 stars!

ABOUT ILONA ANDREWS

ILONA ANDREWS is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Times and USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.
