Eva Leigh makes her Avon debut with the first book in her smart and sexy Wicked Quills of London series!
Eleanor Hawke loves a good scandal. And readers of her successful gossip rag live for the exploits of her favorite subject: Daniel Balfour, the notorious Earl of Ashford. So when the earl himself marches into her office one day and invites her to experience his illicit pursuits firsthand, Eleanor is stunned. Gambling hells, phaeton races, masquerades…What more could a scandal writer want than a secret look into the life of this devilishly handsome rake?
Daniel has secrets and if The Hawk’s Eye gets wind of them, a man’s life could be at stake. And what better way to distract a gossip than by feeding her the scandal she desperately craves? But Daniel never expected the sharp mind and biting wit of the beautiful writer, and their desire for each other threatens even his best laid plans.
But when Eleanor learns the truth of his deception, Daniel will do anything to prove a romance between a commoner and an earl could really last forever.
It's been some time since I read a good historical romance. I first got into the genre thanks to Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, and Eloisa James. Throughout high school, historical romances were all that I read, besides Harry Potter. In the 1800s, it was quite uncommon to see a woman be independent, financially and romantically. That's the first thing I liked about this book. Eleanor Hawke is an independent woman with her own newspaper business, The Hawk's Eye. She writes salacious columns about the scandalous lives of the aristocracy. Daniel Balfour, Earl of Ashford, is looking for his missing best friend Jonathan Lawson, the heir to the dukedom of Holcombe. Since Ashford is a favorite target of the Hawk's Eye, he decided to insert himself with the editor in chief, to see if he could glean any information about Jonathan's whereabouts. Despite his immediate loathing of her occupation and she against his rakish reputation, the attraction between the two grows as they begin to spend more time together. In an effort to find Jonathan, Daniel puts himself in Eleanor's cross hairs and invites her to join him to private events hosted by the most scandalous members of the ton, so that she might find the inspiration of her next piece. The time line is a little wonky. SPOILER ALERT! [They meet, get to know each/respect each other, fall in love, know each other romantically and break up within a couple of weeks.] This didn't bother me so much because I used to read about it all the time. If anything, their courtship was a bit rushed by the journey to HEA was realistic enough, IMO. Kudos, Eva Leigh. You got me to read historical romance again.

SCANDAL TAKES THE STAGE
The Wicked Quills of London Book #2
Eva Leigh
Releasing Oct 27th, 2015
Avon Books
Eva Leigh’s smart and sexy Wicked Quills of London series continues, with a playwright and a Viscount . . . together they may create a scandal worthy of the stage, but can their love last after the final curtain falls?
Successful playwright Maggie Delamere has no interest in the flirtations of noblemen like Cameron, Viscount Marwood. She once paid dearly for a moment of weakness . . . and vows to rebuff the wildly persistent—and irritatingly handsome—scoundrel at every turn. But when pressure to deliver a new play hampers her creativity, an invitation to use his country estate as a writer’s retreat is too tempting to resist...
For years, Cam has admired Maggie’s brilliant work, and he can’t pass up the opportunity to discover if the beautiful, mysterious playwright is as passionate and clever as the words that flow from her quill. He’s never offered a lady his bed without being in it, but if it means loosening Maggie’s pen—and her inhibitions—he’ll do exactly that.
But soon Cam’s plans for seduction become a fight for Maggie’s heart. He’s more than the scandalous, carefree rake society believes him to be . . . and she’s the only woman who has ever noticed.

In book two of this series, we focus on Maggie, a female playwright who has a serious case of writer's block. The Imperial theater has been Maggie's sanctuary since she first started writing and unfortunately, things are no going well. Since the successful debut of The Shattered Heart, the most popular burletta Maggie has ever written, Maggie has been pressured to write the sequel; something I'm sure most authors can attest to. Cameron, Viscount Marwood, is a fan of Maggie's burlettas and fanboys over the prospect of the sequel. Maggie has tried everything to get her creative juices flowing, but alas, nothing's working. To add more pressure, the board of directors for the Imperial give Maggie a deadline for the sequel. Either Maggie delivers the script in a couple of weeks or she's out of a job. As her biggest fan, Cameron is willing to do whatever it takes to help Maggie write the sequel and it just happens that getting under her skirts is a bonus. Maggie is a slight cynic due to life's punches and she's aware of how Cameron operates, but it doesn't stop her from falling for him and he for her. IMO, I think this was a strong sequel. You'll see familiar characters from the previous book, realistic scenarios and HEA. :)
