At the dawn of time, there were 13 Houses in the Zodiac Galaxy. Now only 12 remain….
Rhoma Grace is a 16-year-old student from House Cancer with an unusual way of reading the stars. While her classmates use measurements to make accurate astrological predictions, Rho can’t solve for ‘x’ to save her life—so instead, she looks up at the night sky and makes up stories.
When a violent blast strikes the moons of Cancer, sending its ocean planet off-kilter and killing thousands of citizens—including its beloved Guardian—Rho is more surprised than anyone when she is named the House’s new leader. But, a true Cancerian who loves her home fiercely and will protect her people no matter what, Rho accepts.
Then, when more Houses fall victim to freak weather catastrophes, Rho starts seeing a pattern in the stars. She suspects Ophiuchus—the exiled 13th Guardian of Zodiac legend—has returned to exact his revenge across the Galaxy. Now Rho—along with Hysan Dax, a young envoy from House Libra, and Mathias, her guide and a member of her Royal Guard—must travel through the Zodiac to warn the other Guardians.
But who will believe anything this young novice says? Whom can Rho trust in a universe defined by differences? And how can she convince twelve worlds to unite as one Zodiac?
Embark on a dazzling journey with ZODIAC, the first novel in an epic sci-fi-meets-high-fantasy series set in a galaxy inspired by the astrological signs.
Check out the quartet!
About Romina
Romina Russell (aka Romina Garber) is a Los Angeles based author who originally hails from Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a teen, Romina landed her first writing gig—College She Wrote, a weekly Sunday column for the Miami Herald that was later picked up for national syndication—and she hasn’t stopped writing since. When she’s not working on ZODIAC, Romina can be found producing movie trailers, taking photographs, or daydreaming about buying a new drum set. She is a graduate of Harvard College and a Virgo to the core.
Interview Questions
1) Now
that you are working towards Thirteen Rising and the conclusion of your Zodiac
series, how do you feel?
I’m a tad sad now that it’s over, but overall, I feel glad and grateful and relieved
to have completed my first series. It’s literally a dream come true!
2)
Out
of all the characters in the Zodiac universe, who gave you the most trouble plot
wise?
I’m a meticulous outliner (chalk it up to my Virgo nature), so I anticipate all
my characters’ choices before I begin drafting—even though I don’t always know
exactly how they’re going to get there. The character that surprises me most
often is probably Hysan, since he’s pretty unpredictable (and riddled with
secrets).
3)
Are
any of your characters modelled after people you know?
Since these characters were born in a universe completely different from our
own, they have unique upbringings that have very little to do with our world. However,
I will say that Rho’s heart was inspired by my luminous little sister—she’s the
original everlasting flame! ;)
4) During
your recent international trips, did you have a good time sightseeing? Did you
get to meet some fans?
I’ve been so fortunate to get the chance to promote the series in countries
like Mexico, Spain, England, and my native Argentina. Far beyond the
sightseeing, the best part of all of those trips was getting to meet readers. I
love how even though we live in vastly different worlds, ZODIAC is our common
language.
5) Who
is by far, your favorite character and why?
When I first started writing the series, Rho and I didn’t get along. As an
emotional and impetuous Cancerian, she has very little in common with my perfectionist
and analytical Vigo nature, so we butted heads constantly in the first few
books. But Rho and I have grown and learned so much over the course of her
journey that she’s become an integral part of who I am. She’s inspired me to be
more patient and forgiving and optimistic, and though it sounds strange to say,
I am immensely proud of her.
6) Do you have any
“ships” and why?
I’ve always loved the idea of Rho and Percy Jackson! Since they’re both
water-loving souls with huge hearts, I think they’d make a great team! ;)
7) Do you have plans to return to the Zodiac
universe in the future?
Not at the moment! (But only the ZODIAC’s stars know what the future holds…)
8) Do
you think your multi-cultural background helped you visualize or create unique
characters?
Absolutely. I immigrated to the US from Argentina when I was young, and it was
a total culture shock. Growing up here and learning a new language and customs,
I found myself stuck between worlds—I wasn’t American enough for the Americans,
and I was no longer Argentine enough for the Argentines. And I think that sense
of homelessness, and that struggle to define myself, really informed and inspired
the worlds of ZODIAC.
9) What
are you up to now?
Brainstorming a new project! Don’t have much to share yet, but hopefully soon.
10) Where
is your favorite place to brainstorm ideas? (NOTE: No need to be too specific)
Coffee shop! I like the
bustle of activity around me.

Do you prefer…….
Lemonade or OJ? Lemonade.
