Bloggerversary Book Review + Giveaway: Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

at 9/20/2015 01:00:00 AM
Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

My Review
I received an ARC of this book at the 2013 SDCC. Kami was promoting her book and I managed to get a copy and an autograph from her. If you have read the Beautiful Creatures quartet (that Kami co-wrote with Margaret Stohl), then you'll love the Legion series. It has all the elements of an episode of Supernatural (Kami's a real big fan) and dash a mystery and adventure. Kennedy, our leading lady, finds her mother dead and a ghost nearly kills her. Much like the Winchesters, Jared and Lukas Lockhart arrive to protect Kennedy and whisk her away to safety. The boys and other members of their team, are the components of a secret society who's mission is to hunt down demons and protect mankind from evil spirits. Kennedy, has no one she can confide in, so she goes with the Legion to discover what her mother was hiding. Overall I thought it was a good story and plot with plenty of twists, but one of the weakest aspect was the lack of overall character development. We don't get much information about the other members of the Legion. There are bits and pieces here and there, but I would have liked more backstories. I always like the romance bits that always happen to be in most YA novels, but I felt the romance could have been amped up a bit. I feel like Kennedy's crushing on Jared because 1) he's hot, 2) hero-worship because he protected her, and 3) he's hot. I still ship them of course, but I need more attraction and chemistry between these two. :/ Otherwise, this book was a good start.

The heart-pounding sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller, Unbreakable, by New York Times bestselling Beautiful Creatures co-author Kami Garcia.

He is here... and he could be anyone.

Kennedy Waters lives in a world where vengeance spirits kill, ghosts keep secrets, and a demon walks among us–a demon she accidentally set free.

Now Kennedy and the other Legion members–Alara, Priest, Lukas, and Jared–have to hunt him down. As they learn more about the history of the Legion and the Illuminati, Kennedy realizes that the greatest mystery of all does not belong to any secret order, but to her own family. With the clock ticking and the life of someone she loves hanging in the balance, Kennedy has to ask the question she fears most: what is it about her past that has left her Unmarked?

My Review
I am one lucky duck. I got a copy of this ARC at Comic Con the following year. :) The book takes place after the events of the first book. Kennedy is in the temporary custody of her aunt (mom's sister) and is immediately shipped off to a prep school for troubled teens. Kennedy tried her best to keep to herself, until Jared and the crew come to her rescue. Kennedy runs away from school and goes off with the Legion to change the outcome of book one. In this book we meet a lot of new characters. We meet Kennedy's mysterious aunt Faith (dad's side) and her father comes out of the woodwork. Surprising revelations about Kennedy's lineage come to light during the Legion's investigation and all hell breaks loose again. The pace of this book was faster than the first and the romance between Jared and Kennedy was definitely better than book one. A word of caution though, this book ends in a cliffhanger and book three's publishing date has yet to be announced. So take your time, and absorb what you're reading. Overall, this book as great.

Does this remind me of Supernatural?
I confess, I'm not familiar with it, so cannot compare! In fact, reading the blurb and review, I'm not sure I can compare it to ANYTHING I've ever read before ... it's like it took a lot of things and blended them and what came out is totally new!

I'm also in the Supernatural shame closet. I love other CW shows and have always planned on watching it. Maybe it will be my next Netflix show! Thanks for the chance in the giveaway!
